Editorial Reviews:

From Amazon.co.uk
Leading mother and genuinely evolutionary composer/performer of New Age music, Constance Demby makes a piece of shimmering beauty on her 1982 offering, Sacred Space Music. The recording's first half, "The Longing", is a magical blend of hammered dulcimer, piano, and viola, a piece that speaks for the hungry human spirit. In answer, the second half, "Radiance", brings together the most pleasing sound of hammered dulcimer, string synthesizer, tinkling bells, and heavenly choral vocals. Elegant, exotic and edifying, Demby's inspired music is sonic light by which to see. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Johns' nightmare   July 2, 2004

I rarely do this, but because a reviewer has totally misunderstood the structure and harmony of the music, I am taking the time to make a correction here. John Cordero has stated that the music "falls into two vastly different worlds," stating that."Attunement, Spirit Trance, and Space Music are atonal." This is incorrect, and I recommend that John do more research to discover what is meant by "atonal," as these albums are similar in tonal construction and harmony to the rest of the albums. When John mentions that they are "reminiscent of a waking nightmare," he may not realize that this music has a way of bringing one's issues to the surface, i.e. - his own personal nightmare issues have been revealed to himself through the music, for this music operates as a mirror. Hopefully, this information will assist both John and others to understand that what appears to be one persons nightmare, can be another's bliss.

Sincerely,
Constance Demby

1 out of 5 stars Two worlds of music   June 26, 2004
John Cordero (Las Vegas, Nevada USA)
First I would like to say that I greatly admire Constance Demby's talent. However, if you are interested in buying her CDs, be aware that her music falls into two vastly different worlds. Novus Magnificat, Set Free, Aeterna, and Sanctum Sanctuorum are rich in harmony and very uplifting. Attunement, Spirit Trance, and Sacred Space Music are atonal and reminiscent of a waking nightmare. Unfortunately Amazon.com does not make much of her music available for listening so it is difficult for someone new to her music to be aware that the mood of her work varies greatly. I would love to have her compose more music along the lines of Set Free and Novus Magnificat.

5 out of 5 stars Metaphysics Aside   October 18, 2003
Marc Ruby™ (Warren, MI USA)
In going through my Constance Demby albums I find that this one 'Sacred Space Music' is the one I play the most often. It is neither the most tuneful nor the most dissonant, but provides an interesting interplay between acoustic and electronic instruments. It presents many of the architectural elements that go into what Demby refers to as 'space' music without being overbearing, making it a perfect introduction to the genre.

The primary sound element in both tracks are strings, with the piano supplying the melodic counterpoint on 'The Longing,' and the hammered dulcimer adding a minimalist element in 'Radiance.' Other voices (including voices) are added as needed to carry out the tonal variation scheme that marks these works. The music is subtle and drawn out, making it perfect for either listening or just plain relaxing.

One of my personal issues with this form of music is its insistence on the trappings of spirituality as part of its validation. I've always felt that composers like Demby stand very well on their own without the need for metaphysical titles and grand New Age gestures. Not that I mind New Age, but too often it winds up as a term used to brush by recognizing this kind of work as legitimate music.

This isn't an easy album to track down, but it's one that is worth the purchase if you do find it. Demby has strong musical skills that deserve a wider recognition.

5 out of 5 stars From the Artists Review Files   October 25, 2002

Used by many therapists and healers as a gateway to the sacred space within. "The Longing", side one, is an extended chamber concerto combining dazzling virtuosity on the hammered dulcimer, with spacious piano and heartstoppingly beautiful viola melodies. The music explores in depth the elusive feelings of yearning and longing. The companion piece, "Radiance",begins again with the hammered dulcimer and then gradually evolves into a vast chorale for wordless voices and synthesizer, a continuous ascent that just keeps moving up.

"An enduring New Age jewel -- sparkling hammer dulcimer, heart-tugging viola melodies, tasteful acoustic piano, shimmering synth." - Body, Mind, Spirit

" A breathtaking treat for the weary soul." - AMG

"A major contribution to the field of new age music... Sacred Space Music should be added to everyone's collection, for it is an almost overwhelming and joyously affirming celebration of the mystical life." - Magical Blend

"A milestone of new age composition. Constance Demby has drawn on her classical training and natural spirituality to invoke heavenly healing power. The two twenty minute compositions flow as one. Constance is a keyboard wizard. This CD features her virtuosity on the hammered dulcimer, string synthesizer and piano. She also adds some very subtle, yet absolutely beautiful, choral vocals."

"...This particular tape has a special quality allowing me to recommend it very highly. I have used it extensively in group healing sessions, and also in the King's Chamber at the Great Pyramid. " - Brugh Joy, M.D.

"Sacred Space is very effective at assisting people to get in tune with their own self esteem and true soul purpose. Three particular clients that have used this tape have soared into realms of their self expression that had heretofore been dreams, and impossible ones at that." Cramer Massage Inst

"Maybe you should put warnings on these products. I listened to Sacred Space for three hours in my car, and after three hours, I didn't care whether I got home or not, and could have riden right out into time on the white light. My experience of Constance Demby's music is pure joy, ecstatic energy. " - G. Cheney

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!   June 3, 2002

Looking for some meditation music I purchased this CD on a whim many years ago. Normally I meditate to R. Carlos Nakai, Riley Lee, or nothing at all. As for New Age I prefer Tangerine Dream, Brian Eno, or Steve Roach. But this Sonic Masterpiece is unlike anything I've ever heard. Being the music snob that I am, (I would never be caught dead with a Yanni or a John Tesh recording.) I was put off at first by this so-called New Age CD. But something kept bringing me back to this beautiful recording again and again. I found myself listening to this CD late at night whenever I was sad or lonely. The first 20 minute track is aptly named THE LONGING. This piece is heartbreaking. The 2nd 20 minute track is called RADIANCE. It brings one out of the feeling of sadness conveyed by the 1st track into, well, radiance.

I don't consider this to be New Age, but more classical in feeling. Why is this wonderful composer not doing soundtracks for film?.......... Typical.

I don't use this CD to meditate because meditation is for not-thinking and not-feeling. And this Masterpiece is about DEEP FEELINGS. BRILLLIANT!!

I recommend SACRED SPACE MUSIC for contemplating your garden, alone, at night. Or shifting sands below desert stars. Or the moon between the dancing shadows of haunted trees. Absolutely alone.
