From Amazon.com African Healing Dance, with lead dancer Wyoma and the dancers and drummers of the Damballa dance troupe, is a step-by-step dance course on healing traditions and spiritual movements that are special to the African dance heritage. An African proverb teaches, "If you can talk, you can sing, and if you can walk, you can dance." Thus African Healing Dance is suited for beginning to advanced dancers, students of dance, instructors, and choreographers studying and/or performing African dance. The instructional video and included manual provide an effective guide for a dance or exercise program at home or in a workshop setting. Director of the Damballa dance troupe as well as head dancer, Wyoma begins with a simple warm-up, including breathing techniques; body articulation movements for the hips, chest, shoulders, and feet; and stretching. She then artistically integrates the teaching of six traditional African dances with the passion and joy of connecting dance movements that have the spirit and energy of nature and the elements (water, wind, fire, and earth) and animals such as the snake, elephant, and bird. A final portion of the 70-minute video is called "The Healing Journey," in which Wyoma encourages personal exploration of inner rhythms and feelings through improvisational movement. As one watches this video, it is difficult not to feel the pulse of the drumbeat and the spiritual strength of Wyoma and her celebration of life through dance. --Christine Aiken

FUN! August 18, 2006 K. Johnson (Montreal, Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have never had so much fun dancing in my living room. It is indeed a good workout, but also Wyoma's smile and joy is infectious. She offers a lot of encouragement along the way and you can't help but want to join in. I think it's a great video for people who feel a little self-conscious. Or for people, like me, who don't like doing straight aerobics. The dvd also gives you the option to just listen to the music if you just want to do your own thing.
i did it once and didn't like it July 2, 2004 i can understand how someone freer and more willing to "yeeeyeeyee" might be able to really get into this tape, i found myself turning it off and going for straight up aerobics. it is interesting and informative, but for me, i couldn't get into the exercise part of the tape, which is what i was looking for.
EXCELLENT VIDEO! May 11, 2004 So authentic, diverse and creative. This video is much, much better than The Method's Afro-Cardio workout.
6 stars!!! January 9, 2004 I own quite a lot of dance videos, and I have to say, after i got this one, i had to can all my other videos. This is by far the BEST video you can own on dance. It is simply beautiful. Wyoma is a REAL dancer. A real dance comes from the heart and is a deep expression of the inner self- and it is beautiful to watch. Wyoma makes anyone feel like they can dance this way, and if they are really letting go of pretentions and conciousness, they'll be able to achieve healing by expressing themselves in a beautiful and true way. at first i didnt really buy the idea of this dance video as being healing- but i have been proven wrong. I come out of it feeling whole, empowered and capable. The warmup is great- it really gets the heart pumping and is great fun (as all dance should be). I use the warmup for other exercise routines. There is so much information and instruction packed into this video that its worth at least 5 times the price. Even if youve never danced before- you'll feel like a pro after trying this out. The only downpoint: The backgound dancers could have been left out- especially the lady who seemed a bit amateurish. although this one informative video can suffice- I really would like to see another video released with wyoma- expanding on this video.
African Healing Dance is beautiful... January 4, 2004 Yoruba (Mississauga, Ontario Canada) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am currently a Djembe drummer --and I was looking for a way to initially learn some of the traditional African Dances without the cost -and I have found it. This video is beautiful ----the intial warm up --although excellent ----I found wasnt very motivating because of the lighting and the enclosed, hollow sounding space ----but once the instructor took it outside --absolutely a gem ----I can watch it as a performance ---I can play my drum like I am within the group and ofcourse I can excercise. The movements are fairly easy -as long as you let yourself go --and feel the drums ---but you do get a workout when your done ---although its so much fun you dont realize it. The last part--improvisation -amazing--you get to apply what you've just learned, express yourself -and just feel the drum----when you finish this tape you feel refreshed and rejuventated. EXCELLLENT!EXCELLENT!EXCELLENT!
