Good intro to Plant Shamanism June 29, 2008 Mr. H. J. Gilbert (London) The author's love for their subject is clear all through the book. A reader new to this subject will encounter quite a few challenging concepts: that plants can talk, even sing to man. Another challenging concept is the use of spells to get what you want: the authors argue that it is okay to use spells to attract a lover. The plants that are particularly studied are the plants in Central South America: the authors try hard to make the book relevant to other readers by suggesting similar plants in Europe. There are some concepts that are difficult to accept: e.g. the shape of the plant indicating its possible use. So a plant that is shaped like a vine is good for warding off snakes. However, one could equally argue that such a shape makes it good for immoblising one. This book is an introduction to plant shamanism and so there is some loss in depth as it tries to cover too many topics. You will need to read more widely (and practise) to get a more indepth knowledge of this fascinating topic.
New Age Pants June 27, 2008 Mr. Simon Hunt (London) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This shabby little tome may please the mass market for New Age hokum, but for any sophisticated, literate inquirer interested in the botany and anthropology of plant shamanism, it is pants. There are genuine books out there for those with a serious interst in plant shamanism (Plants of the Gods, Schultes et al. being one of them - beautifully illustrated, lucidly annotated with the psychoactive properties, and the sacred, ritual and shamanic uses, and comprehensive). Many of the reviews for this derelict text are also suspicious, particularly the 5 star reviews since the reviewers rate no other author's books. Steer clear unless you are a 'way-of-the-dolphins-spirit-guide-with-leprechauns-and-shamanic-drumming-CD' sop. I sent my copy back to the publisher in disdain.
Treasure chest of wisdom February 3, 2008 R. E. Russnak (Berkshire ,UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Honouring the interconnectedness of every living organism on this planet, this book opens up the "doors of perception" to communicating with the wisdom of plant consiousness. Easy to follow instructions on how to open the lines of communication to the plant spirits and constant reminders on how easy it is to keep this door open. Full of ancient wisdom and modern "quantum reality shift" science. A real joy to read, peppered with case histories, interviews with shamans, personal experience and anecdotes, this is a useful "treasure chest of wisdom", a true reference book for many years to come. Infinite gratitude to Ross and Howard for sharing their "world of magic" with us.
Cor blimey January 18, 2008 Cathy Gent (Boxhill) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I borrowed this book from a friend of mine, and once I started reading I couldn't put it down until I'd read the whole thing. Then I read it all again. And again. In my opinion, this is not only a fantastic reference book to have in your collection, but also a life-changing read. When I had finished this book, many questions had been answered, new ones had been raised and my outlook was permenantly altered for the better. I MUST HAVE MY OWN COPY!!!!
A brilliant book November 9, 2007 debbie jane (canada) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am just back after taking a two week course with Ross in the Amazon jungle working with the amazing healer ayahuasca. I decided not to read this book before going so it wouldn't spoil my expectations but so I read it on the plane and when I got home. I have to say it's fantastic and confirms my own experiences with ayahuasca. Ross is a talented writer and teacher and there are some great photos in this book too. Very recommended if you want to know about plants, healing, ayahuasca, or the truth of shamanism.
