Amazon.co.uk Review The claims of this book are high: the Detox programme will increase your energy levels, boost your immune system, lose weight and even banish cellulite--and all in 30 days? Scrivner, a member of the British School of Complementary Therapy, devised the Detox programme after years of treating harassed and "burn out" clients. The programme (not a diet) is a means to spring-clean the body, ridding it of the built-up excess wastes and toxins accumulated from our modern-day lives of stress, pollutants, processed foods and physical inactivity. So what's involved? At first, it does at first seem a rather severe regime. There is a strict list of foods not to be strayed from, there is a cold shower every morning, daily exercise to be taken, plus combinations of other activities such as tonics, dry skin rubs, massages and breathing exercises to fit in. As the author says: "it is a total body experience, holistic in approach, that works on every part of the body--internally and externally". The skill of this book is that it does actually convince you to try the programme--if not completely strictly, then at least at some personably attainable level. There is an excellently digestible overview of the programme, discussing why we need to Detox and what it means to be "toxed" in the first place. The tone is upbeat and encouraging and its assurance that results will be felt in a matter of days is both inspiring and believable. -- Abi Frisby

"Bad Science" anyone? January 2, 2009 P. Maley (paris) It's just a silly fad, isn't it ? Doesn't seem to have any scientific basis, but if for some reason you DO want to "detox" then at least it's fairly well written. Try Bad Science by Ben Goldacre.
Diet, cold showers and skin chafing January 2, 2008 Moby (Walthamstow) 16 out of 20 found this review helpful
If you want to come off drugs or quit drinking, do not waste your money on this book. It's just a stupid diet. It does not help at all with withdrawals.
Not for drink and drug withdrawals December 1, 2007 Joscatuna (London) 14 out of 17 found this review helpful
This book is misleadingly listed by Amazon under 'drugs' and 'addictions'. Do not be misled. If you are seeking a 'detox', in the sense of withdrawal from drugs or alcohol, this book is completely useless. It could even be dangerous. The book may be of some interest to women who are worried about 'cellulite'.
Buy it! January 30, 2007 S. Taylor 6 out of 19 found this review helpful
I have followed this book for the past 6 years, twice a year, every year, would not swap it for any other. Hard work to start with but the benefits far out weigh the hardship. First 7 days (depending on your current lifestyle) tired, irritable, spotty, horrible. After that, it all gets better until at the end you feel fantastic. The more regularly you do it, the easier it becomes, alot of it becomes part of your normal routine anyway. I found that there have been many aspects of previous habits I have never gone back to, caffeine for instance and I drank easily 6-8 mugs of black strong coffee every day! I have brown rice nearly always, eat far more fish than I ever did before and tend to eat soya rather than dairy. Try it, you won't regret it.
No pain, no gain January 8, 2007 Just Jarvis (UK) 6 out of 19 found this review helpful
I have followed this book every January for the past 5 years and wouldn't swap it for all the Voderman in Countdown. However, there is a very large hill to climb before you get to the top and feel like whirling around like Julie Andrews. During the first week of the programme I curse Scrivner with any remaining strength I have in my weak, deprived body. I suffer headaches from caffeine withdrawal, nausea from changes in my bloodsugar levels and general moodiness from lack of any foods packaged in brightly coloured shiny foil wrappers. The first week is a really tough and spotty one. You are constantly planning and preparing meals, and food becomes one big obsession. But once you get past the first 6 days you'll start to feel the benefits and the food preparing will just become routine. Each time I've reached the second week of this programme I start to sleep deeper and wake up naturally earlier. My complexion looks clearer and glowing (that'll be all the carrot juice!). I have more energy and more motivation to go out and do things. I lose those spare centimetres that I gained over the festive season and generally feel positive and happy. It really is worth following this programme if you are committed to giving your body a full 30 day MOT. Good luck.
