not enough positive support November 13, 2008 A Reader (UK) This book is more about the Scars than the Healing of Emotional Abuse. Typically a chapter consists of about 20 pages of very painful reading about difficulties, with little support, followed by one page about general principles of healing. And many of the healing suggestions refer to a concept of a Christian God that some readers may not share. The best that can be said is that each chapter ends with a positive attitude, a reminder that there are other possible ways of looking at oneself than the ones learned as a child. Try instead the similarly titled book by Beverly Engel, which has lots of exercises and support, and a focus on developing better inner parents.
Answered a lot of questions January 18, 2005 Elaine (United Kingdom) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
Having suffered many years of emotional abuse, as a child and as an adult, I was desperate to find out what the reasons behind it were so that I could put a stop to it once and for all. This book identifies the different types of emotional abuse and helped me to understand WHY people use it on others. I am now able to notice when it is happening and act immediately by speaking up. My relationships with family and friends have improved because I no longer accept put downs or being undermined in any way. As for love relationships, I feel confident that I will now be able to make good choices because I would recognise an insecure, controlling bully early on. I had spent enormous amounts of thinking time and emotional energy trying to work out the 'why's' and this book gave the answers. A good book to follow this would be 'Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway' by Susan Jeffers as it can give you the tools to feel less 'needy' and live the life you want to live.
fantasic book for those dealing with the past February 28, 2002 19 out of 21 found this review helpful
i go this as most books dealing with abuse are all sexual and i went through emotional and mental abuse. this is a brilliant book. highly recommeneded for anyone who wants to heal the scars. it is sometimes tough going but it leans towards the positive side of getting through life as oppossed to forcing 'medical' terms and conditions on you. i found it a great aid to my healing.
