A great book May 30, 2007 lyvanB (macedonia) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is a great book which contains some really useful techniques for self-awareness, motivation, and empowerment, drawn from various warrior traditions, and also psychology, as well as Ninja philosophy. The temptation with books like these is to NOT do the exercises they contain, but I really suggest you do because many of them are immensely powerful and really unique. I learned a lot from this book - almost nothing about martial arts because the book is, as the title says, about SPIRITUAL PRACTICES - but I learned a lot about me and really felt I grew from the experience of reading it. Recommended.
Neo shamanic fluff December 5, 2006 Monki (uk) 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
i've read one of Heavens previous shamanic books too, and became curious about this one due to not being aware of his connections to ninjutsu. Heaven is a low level student of To-Shin Do, Hayes break away organisation from the Bujinkan. It is interesting to note, that given the title Carlos Castenada is quoted more times than Hayes, who is also quoted more times than Hatsumi sensei, strange really. The title should be changed it is completley mis-leading. It is at best only loosely 'inspired' by Ninjutsu and is more in line with other neo-shamanic/psychology self help rubbish. This book is rubbish if you are after anything concerning Ninjutsu, though Heavens statement regarding the connection of the 'spiritual practises' to the prowess of the ninja, rather than just their physical skills is a point many over look. This book is nothing but Heavens re-hashed neo-shamanic fluff. I wouldn't even go near it if you are into shamanism, shamanism is not about self help or self empowerment, read something genuine instead. I gave it one star because there is no option for no stars which is what it deserves
Highly recommended November 14, 2006 ** (Tenterden , England) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I would like to add my review of this fantastic book by Ross Heaven. He writes with such honesty, integrity and in such a down to earth way. All his books are an inspiration to anyone who is interested in finding out the truth about themselves and or Shamanic work. I think he is unique, as he has no place in his writings for his ego unlike so many others in his field. I would recommend that you review all his books before you buy your first one and maybe read them in the order they were written!
Mastering the Four Gates October 26, 2006 Brian (Ireland) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I agree with the reviewer who says this book is mismatched title. I think that's right. What this book really is is a very accomplished personal development and work of psychology and spiritual discovery. The exercises are excellent and the medicine wheel teachings are brilliant. They give you a map for your life and your spiritual journey. All of this is illustrated with stories from the ninja and other warriors but I dont get that this was ever intended to be a book ABOUT ninjas. Its more a book about YOU and where youre at. Its not uncommon for publishers to give books jazzy titles aimed at selling loads of copies which somethimes have nothing to do with the book! I think that's the case here. But I hope this book DOES sell loads of copies because it deserves to and because it WILL help any reader to find their own direction. It gets my 5 stars.
Slightly misleading title, me thinks!! June 30, 2006 mattlatch (london) 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
NINJUTSU STUDENTS: BEWARE.....This should be titled "The spiritual practices of various tribes from around the world" I felt slightly cheated by this book, as I am a Ninjutsu student and genuinely interested in Eastern religion and philosophy. Still, I stuck it out to the end (barely!) Only a fraction of this book is dedicated to the Ninja . Ross Heaven manages some how to base this "self help" book superficially around philosophies of the ninja. The real accomplishment, in my view, is how he manages to entangle such a variety of quotes and philosophies from around the world. From Bruce Lee to John Wayne(?!!), the Bible to Carl Jung, he's chucked it all in! In fact, Heaven has crammed in so many random quotes that the book would be half as long if they were taken out. This owes just as much to positive pyschology and shamanism as it does to the Ninja! Stick to Hayes or Hatsumi!!!
