5 out of 5 stars A new NLP classic...   October 5, 2008

If you're really interested in finding out about NLP you will love Magic in Practice. Although aimed at doctors and health professionals its appeal is much wider than that.

Garner Thomson and Khalid Khan write with clarity from their own extensive experience. Their book includes an elegant description of NLP, is full of case studies and exercises and, uniquely, references current research that places NLP in a scientific context.

You will find `algorithms for change' that give you a structure to use NLP creatively in your own work and show how elements of NLP fit together systemically. This is much more than just a recipe book of techniques.

If you've heard about NLP and want to read something more scientific, and you want to start applying NLP in your own work and life and you want to make your communication life-enhancing, whatever the context - Magic in Practice is for you.

5 out of 5 stars For layman or academic, health care professional or patient - read this book!   August 4, 2008

From my own perspective, even a long and personal acquaintance with a rather 'retiring' Garner Thomson is effective in revealing only a little of the professional skill and depth of personal experience which is revealed in this book.

It is a compelling piece of writing and, whilst being faultless in its' accuracy and presentation, it is extremely accessible to all - from someone who knows little to one who has a good and sound working knowledge of the subject. However, it goes beyond being merely a 'text book' - informative and 'one for the library shelf'! The reader is invited to 'engage', and the time given to the exercises set out throughout the work, draw us into a sequence of positive change.

The comment made by Dr. Bandler, co-founder of NLP, in his introduction to the book, is appropriate praise for a book which is highly commendable; an extremely valuable tool for health care professionals and an informative resource for any person who is concerned in their care for others.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all health professionals...   February 2, 2008

This review is in addition to my comments on the book's cover, having known of this duo's work for some years now, and having taken part in their excellent medical NLP courses.

It's actually quite difficult to write positive reviews without sounding too gushy or overusing superlatives, but I think that Garner Thomson and Khalid Khan have crafted a masterpiece. To my mind, it already reads like a seminal text for medical communication. It's just a matter of time...

The authors have meticulously referenced a huge amount of literature looking at medical, social, psychological and behavioural studies. Their experienced backgrounds in NLP and general practice coupled with a clear writing style and sheer depth of knowledge put this book in a league of its own.

Lots of important information, powerful case studies and easy-to-use skills place MAGIC IN PRACTICE above and beyond all other communication and consultation models for me.

Organic, innovative, timeless and utterly brilliant... But please don't just take my word for it...
