no great secret, just a very good workout July 22, 2008 Mr. P. G. B. Stromeyer 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
if you're able to ignore the eastern mysticism and holistic stuff, this book basically details five compound exercises which provide you with an excellent short energetic workout that stimulate and engage all major muscle groups and joints with minimal impact. i've been doing them for a year now and they have provided me with a time-friendly simple-to-use workout programme which sorts me out nicely. it's important to engage them in a fluid manner and with some intensity of pace in order to stimulate the heartbeat and raise body temperataure, so that you're a bit out of breath by the end of it. if done correctly, you'll feel good because of the endorphins released into your bloodstream by your pituitary gland and hypothalamus (aka the "chakras"). also, the increased blood circulation will speed up the removal of toxins from your body and the plumping up of your epidermis which will lessen the appearance of wrinkles and tighten the skin tissue. furthermore, increased and improved circulation will also also stoke your metabolic rate as blood is pumped to your muscles for nourishment, leading your body to burn fat for more energy. that's basically all there is to it, no great secret, just five very useful exercises which should be treated as such and no more. no, this will not arrest the ageing process - your body's cells will deteriorate and decay over time and some day you will die, sorry. however, if you look after your body by cutting out the rubbish, eating well and excercising right, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to keep going hale and strong into a ripe old age. like i said, a good book for the excercises alone, but if the other stuff makes you feel positive about things, then go for it, it's all good fun. cheers and take care!
awesome July 20, 2008 Crazy Foo (England Land) It's realy nice to find a set of yoga exercises that can be completed in a short space of time. Hatha yoga can take up to two hours, and the book i had on the subject insisted on the importance of performing the whole set in the correct order without modification. I wouldn't want to ignore this advice out of respect for the tradition. The Five Tibetans are great because they do not require much flexibility. My flexibility is probably worse than average (due to bad posture habits) but i could manage all these exercises. They suited me better than the yoga i've done before, as they rely more on streangth, balance and are more aerobic in nature. To someone not used to a strenuous workout they might seem a bit much at first, but personally i find them an exellent middle ground compared to the harsh training i used to put myself through for martial arts. They gave me so much energy! It was like being on a sugar high or something! Lasted for a whole day! It's a realy good workout! I imagine most men find yoga boring and frustrating, but these exercises feel alot more physical, they get your heart rate up and work all the core muscle groups in your body. Much more suited to a modern life than the long, complicated exercises of other yoga forms. It's a short book and I was initially dissapointed when i saw it, but the exercises are well photographed and described and are themselves quite brilliant. If these exercises don't appear to be working for you: Please note that it does say in the book that the first few times you perform these exercises they will probably be exausting rather than energising. I found this true when i first took an interest in martial arts, but after a week you become fitter, and thus have more energy, so i believe this may be the case with these rather physical exercises. Most exercises will not benefit you if you just do them once! If you are already in reasonable shape you will probably feel the benefits immediately, and should be able to complete all the repetitions. It may be worth noting that i meditated straight after the exercises, so maybe this helped? Or perhaps it's just a matter of finding a system that suits the nature of your energy? If like me, tai chi and hatha yoga did nothing for you, maybe this is what you've been looking for.
I feel energised with kundalini yoga November 29, 2007 Eve (stoke on trent, staffs United Kingdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As an introduction to Kundalini yoga (KY) this little book works very well, it gives a little history in to the 5 Tibetans, chakras, breathing, meditation all in 9 compact chapters. It's easy to read and not too new-agey that might put people off. I've done these exercises before but with the Ana Brett & Ravi Singh Beginners and Beyond Kundalini Yoga DVD and they leave me feeling energised for the day. I would recommend their dvd along with this book. While the exercises are well explained in the book it is good to be able to see them being done (on the dvd)and the book gives some background which the dvd doesn't! They compliment each other very well. Because I think you need some warm up before doing the 5 I'm taking 1 star.
Not for me thanks.. November 19, 2006 Dubbie (ireland) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I'll keep this short and simple. These exercises did nothing for me and only made more tired than before I began. And I'm speaking from experience, as I've done several other forms of eastern energy disciplines over the years and this one is the most disappointing to date. I believe one or two of the tibetans may be contradictory to good health. But by all means make up your own mind.. You may also like to refer to the comments written for 'The fountain of youth' which seems to me to be the same set of exercises, those reviews are not as complementary as those for this publication..
Straight forward, informative, and achievable July 5, 2004 Luis P (London) 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
Great book, fairly short and concise but with all the information you would need on the practice of the Five Tibetans. I bought this book a few years back but, like many things, read it and shelved it for another day... Whilst putting up new shelves for my books I came across it and decided to finally give it a go.The postures/exercises are straight forward enough, and the whole practice lasts 15 minutes or less. After a week of practice I feel somewhat energised. It would probably help if you have a bit of yoga experience but it's not essential. I had only been to about 10 classes previously and most of the poses were not practised there anyway. Highly recommended. The author writes clearly, and this is definitely a great place to start for the beginnings of a daily practice.
