Amazon.com Perhaps the perfect children's bedtime book, Goodnight Moon is a short poem of goodnight wishes from a young rabbit preparing for--or attempting to postpone--his own slumber. He says goodnight to every object in sight and within earshot, including the "quiet old lady whispering hush." Clement Hurd's illustrations are simple and effective, alternating between small ink drawings and wide, brightly colored views of the little rabbit's room. Finding all of the items mentioned throughout the book within the pictures is a good bedtime activity--a reappearing little mouse is particularly pesky. By the end of the little rabbit's goodnight poem, the story has quieted to a whisper, and the drawings have darkened with nightfall. As you turn the last page, you can expect a sleepy smile and at least a yawn or two. (Picture book)

A firm favourite with my kids December 22, 2008 Mrs. Rachel Van Tonder (uk) I bought it on the strength of its reviews on Amazon's American site. When it arrived however, I was a bit dubious about whether it was going to be a hit with my kids. Pages were thin, pictures were quite old-fashioned (understandably because this book was written in the 50s I think!), colours were very "basic" and everything. BUT, my eldest daughter (then 3 years old) loved it. I bought a load of other books at that same time based on positive reviews for her, but this was one of the 2 or 3 storybooks that she'd choose regularly for me to read to her... Now she's 6 and she still asks us to read it to her from time to time. She has a 2 year old baby sister who also absolutely loves this book. Night after night, I'd be asked to read it to her over and over again. And I just don't know why! Perhaps there is some kind of charm about the book that attracts youngsters! It deserves all the positive reviews it gets - though I'm not sure if it has the same appeal to adults. It didn't for me, but I suppose this has proven to me once again that adults often fall into the trap of buying stuff for their kids just because they themselves like it and assume their kids will. I can't tell you how many things I've gotten so far for my kids which couldn't hold their attention for more than a couple of minutes. This one was worth every single penny! Its now quite tatty and dog-eared though...because its so well-read (and perhaps, well-chewed). I wish they'd come out with a hardboard version of this!
Surprising hit! October 16, 2008 Lucy Loo (London) I bought this book based on the reviews on Amazon but when it arrived I was convinced I'd made a mistake. It seemed very old-fashioned and boring but as so many other people have found, I was wrong! My 18 month old LOVES this book. He sits still and listens intently from start to finish which is so unlike him. He always makes me read it at least 3 times, so I have to ration him to twice a week or I'd get totally sick of it! A brilliant find!
Tabitha Rose and The Bedtime Story July 28, 2008 Tabitha Rose is two years and nine months. She loves a story at bedtime with her trusted teddy Charly. I bought this book to take on holiday to help her to settle and wind down after a busy day. We have enjoyed it together every night since we have returned. Tabitha is my Grandaughter and she spends every Monday and Tuesday with us. Goodnight Moon is our final story at night. We enjoy looking at the illustrations and find that the changed from dusk, when the story begins, to the brightness of the moon and stars at the end sets the scene and mood for the end of the day. The little rabbit settling down and the young mouse are just right for this time. The end of the book and the old lady 'whispering hush' soothe and settle Tabitha. She is usually still awake but happily lets me leave the room and she goes to sleep. I would recommend this story but wish I had introduced it sooner.
A Great Baby Book May 14, 2008 redSG (Glasgow, Scotland) A friend from the States sent us this book, and what a great book it is. My 14 week old son is entranced by this book. No matter how hyper or unruly he seems before an attempt at story time, he settles immediately for "Goodnight, Moon." The swapping of the pages, between bright colours and black/white, is a wonderful device that seems to work with young babies. It's become our favourite bedtime story, and I'd highly recommend it.
Like they all say: unexpectedly incredible! March 21, 2008 V. Carlin (London, England) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I tossed this rather ugly little book aside when it was given to me for my 6 month old. The pictures seemed very old fashioned and cheap - only some in colour - and it got progressively dingy. Plus the rhyme was witless. When I moved house, this tumbled out of the books I brought with me, and I was ready to toss it aside again. But I just happened to read it to my daughter and found she was totally engrossed - she was now FOURTEEN months old. The following day, she woke in the middle of the night, screaming and impossible to settle. This was a very rare occurrence, and I wasn't sure what to do, but I remembered she'd been interested in Goodnight Moon the day before and read it to her in a low light. She stopped screaming instantly, and was lulled by the words and by focusing on the dwindling light in the book. Since then, every single time I've read it to her, it has soothed her, when she's been ill, upset, grumpy from lack of sleep or hyperactive. It is some kind of witchcraft, I tell you! Not as sophisticated, funny or beautiful as ANY of her other books, nevertheless, this is maybe the most important baby book I own. I don't know what's in it that does the trick, but it works. I am also a convert - I find the rhymes and pictures beguiling now.
