This book demands that you think. May 5, 2001 priscilla.hunter@btinternet.com (london) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this book in 1986, there were very few books around then that treated nutrition as a serious subject. I read this book, and others by adelle davies, miriam polunin, etc.I changed the way my family ate. Many of my friends took heed and also modified their family's diet. my son gary mccallion died six years ago from testicular cancer,i will never get over our loss, however i am comforted by the knowledge that bad dietary habits did not contribute to his illness. Read this book and take charge of your life.
VERY insightful April 10, 1999 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is one very informed lady. She has been studying food for decades, and has a mountain on interesting (scary really) facts (statistics, not opinions) to share. Granted, she promotes vegitarianism, but she does not try to force it down your throat. This book is not a over passionate rally-the-troops book, it is a point by point factual account of that state of the world food situation. If you are or want to be a vegitarian, definitely buy this book. Even if you are just an interested observer, still buy it. You will be amazed at the little known facts presented here.
Decent recipes, poor understanding of economics March 19, 1999 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
The recipes are reasonable, but the real issue in vegetarian diets isn't protein - instead the problem comes from the reduced availability of iron and other minerals. The economics are simplistic; even if every American quit eating meat products tomorrow, the Third World countries are unlikely to quit growing cash crops and instead grow food for their populations. The sentiments are nice, and warm and fuzzy, and the author's heart, is in the right place.
This book changed my life November 12, 1998 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I know it sounds corny, but this book really did change my life. I am now a vegetarian, and will be one until I die, largely because of reading Diet for a Small Planet 6 years ago. This book decribes and illuminates the effects that meat-eating has on the world - economic, environmental, and social. I defy anyone to read this book and still feel comfortable with eating meat.
