NOT Huna but a load of pre-Y2K babble December 24, 2007 Anonymous 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Despite a pleasant beginning, I soon found that this book did not live up to expectations. Here is why. First of all "Pila of Hawaii," aka Mr William Chiles, is NOT a Hawaiian. He settled in Hawaii in the mid-1980's but is in fact from the US mainland. And although he tries to get a lot of mileage out of having a Cherokee grandfather, I personally do not see how this would confer Huna credentials. Secondly, this book is more of Mr Chiles' personal take on the Huna rather than the real thing. Whilst one can sympathise with Mr Chiles over his experience as a Viet-Nam vet, I cannot help feeling that his emotional scars have created a slant in his views that I, for one, would not necessarily agree with. Yet he seems to take it for granted that his own perspective is the only valid one, and just to make sure he puts the point across, most of the book seems to consist of such rantings. I am afraid as I progressed through my reading I found myself sympathising less and less with Mr Chiles and more and more with the former Mrs Chiles. The author makes, in fact repeats, a number of unsubstantiated claims and "predictions" but as this book was published in 1995 we now know that many of them are... well, untrue. Compared to other authors' Mr Chiles' translation of Hawaiian words is often contradictory and generally seems to suffer from a lack of research or system. The book is also peppered with misspellings of common words (for example, he keeps getting "effect" and "affect" mixed up and refers to "lay lines" instead of "ley lines") and there are several misspellings of proper names. Unattributed quotes are the norm, and there are even some downright misleading references. For instance, Mr Chiles refers to a mysterious (i.e. unnamed) book by a "Capt W. M. Morgans" [sic] who he describes as a knowledgeable 33 Freemason. Sadly this is none other than the (in)famous book by Capt Wm (i.e. William) Morgan, who never made it to 33 , was probably not even a genuine captain, and was a self-declared anti-Mason. You can't get it much more wrong than that, can you? If you are genuinely interested in Huna rather than opinionated New-Agey babble, you are much better off reading the scholarly work of Max Freedom Long.
Necessary fuel for anyone who feels the fire to truly LIVE. August 23, 1999 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
In his beautiful narrative, author Pila Chiles, gifted seer and healer, speaks honestly to the hearts of all those in search of Truth and Light. The magical island of Hawaii serves as the enchanting backdrop of this important spiritual work, but the message belongs to every human soul who has ever craved True Contentment. This book should be included on the top ten list of spiritually important books for the new millenium.
Moved my soul! August 2, 1999 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book gave me "chicken skin". Now I know why the call to Hawaii is the call to the soul. Everyone who has the inkling there is something more to life than the insanity and the eight to five should read this book!
A travelers companion, for the journey home to the heart March 8, 1999 I purchased this book a few weeks before I traveled to Hawaii, in 1997, and I felt as if reading it, prepared me for the energies and gifts of Hawaii. I knew when I arrived that I had arrived HOME, and I referred to the book, while I was there, for inspiration ,and confirmation. It is well written, and I recommend it highly, especially if you are planning a trip to any of the Hawaiian islands. I am returning there this summer, and am so glad I have it on my bookshelf to read once more. I know it will once again speak to my soul, just as Hawaii does. Aloha
For the awakening Soul who is aware of Planetary change!! November 6, 1997 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
At a time when all souls on the planet are awakening, this very special book invites your soul to sing and explore the secrets and mysteries of the universal force of power and energy that exists not only in Hawaii but deep within yourself as well. Withe Pila the "seer" as your expert guide, you will be taken on a journey of adventure and discovery. You will become a "kahuna" student of the secrets, and you will learn that the body of the Hawaiian islands can be thought of as a symbolic body of all levels of mind, body and spirit. To know Hawaii is to know yourself and the answer to the yearning of your soul. There is no greater spokesperson on the spirit of Hawaii than this man "Pila" Chiles. He is the Gatekeeper of the soul of Hawaii. Dr. P. Sunray, author/Director, Sunray Healing Haven & National Interfaith Seminary
