A great book January 18, 2000 patrizia.pisani@magnet.mt (Malta) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book is very good especially for incest survivors. The author suggests seven steps to which are 'easy' to follow and which have been proved by work groups lead by the author. The steps are very well explained and every step is broken in smaller pieces. I highly recommend this book!
Trite, banal and frighteningly over-simplified October 7, 1999 29 out of 31 found this review helpful
I have read many books over the past ten years about or related to childhood sexual abuse. I am horrified by the over simplification and mis-information about this subject which is consistent throughout the whole of this book. The attitude of "Healing from pain" ...as a management that relies so heavily on external influence, denies the inherant abilities survivors have to grow and learn from the experience which shapes who we are. Sadly, it seems in an effort to demystify the complex issues of all "types" of childhood abuse, Ms. Engel's information is at best peripheral and can only pertain to her own personal experience of this subject. I would also like to add that in regarding one "type" of abuse as more serious or traumatic over another "type" of abuse, only serves in facilitating the chronic paradigm of ignorance that pervades this society.
Excellent book for beginners in recovery. May 19, 1998 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
By the time I found this book, I'd already read many others dealing with the harsh & painful topic of sexual abuse in childhood. I wish this book had been the first book on recovery I'd found. It is one which I buy to loan or pass on to friends new to recovery. All books on abuse are difficult to read, but 'The Right to Innocence' makes the step into recovery more bearable than some of the other books available.
