Disappointing January 9, 2009 Dyspeptic Spirit (Sunny Berkshire) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There is no doubt that Bill Bailey is a unique talent. Disappointingly this show held at Wembley does not show him at his best. Personally I dislike large arenas and refuse to go to any venue unless I am close enough to the stage to see the performer's eyes. This is especially important for comedy where crowd participation and interaction are fundamental to a good show. Why people flock to see the likes of Lee Evans at huge arenas is beyond me. If you can only watch the performer on the big screen why bother to go and see them live at all. You might as well wait for the DVD release! Frank Skinner recently wrote that he decided on his last tour to avoid huge venues (even though he has the fanbase to do so) because they made him feel dislocated from his audience. I think a lot of the big names in comedy should learn from this approach and think of the fans before their pockets. Anyway back to the review, Bill Bailey appears to view this performance as a fitting climax to his career. Unfortunately the location appears to have gone to his head and instead of delighting his audience with the quirky, unusual comedy for which he is renowned, we get light shows galore, special effects, recycled material and even Bill Bailey: the "rock god". At an hour and a half the show feels very long (not helped by some fairly weak material) and parts of the show definitely outstay their welcome (the Hindi Creep.. why?). I would only recommend this to diehard fans who have everything else he has done and are desperate for more. Newbies should try Bewilderness first.
He's better than this January 8, 2009 Mr. Michael Heron Sorry Bill, I love your stuff usually but this was almost entirely phoned-in. It struck me as what an inferior Bill Bailey tribute comedian might do - it's all very much in the right *style*, but the content doesn't come up to scratch. A huge shame, but definitely check out some of his other stuff.
Good - and that is a critisism January 7, 2009 a casual reviewer (surrey, uk) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
As many others have said, this show is good, but it is not great which is a serious problem. Part Troll was brilliant, but this show goes over too much old ground. There is really little fresh and genuinly involving material to enjoy untill about the middle of the second half. Fr that reason, and the fact that even this is better than watching some of the tosh out there. Hopefully Bill will be back on form next time.
Hello Wembley! January 5, 2009 Sue Denim (Scunthorpe) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well, to start off with this is a testiment to Bill's 22 year career in stand up. He has progressed, I feel, in quality and fluidity in each of his previous releases with Part Troll forever being his opus. Personally this DVD doesn't do him the credit he deserves, it lacks the atmosphere and sensation of being at a live show. Despite Bill's sparodic genius, it would seem that this venue is too large and does not create the intimacy or excitement that makes a great Bill Bailey show. Though these flaws; the show is still laugh out loud hilarious and well worth the purchase.
So so January 4, 2009 J. Mcgahan (York, UK) Again with everyone else on this one... I love bill but this didn't really cut it, not much jokes and gags... too much relying on the technology... was a good try tho, and a coming at the stand up from a different directing... still like seeing the different way he presented the stand up but just hope he can get a better balance between his comedy and technology next time.
