4 out of 5 stars Delighted!   January 1, 2009

Hi there. I've never bothered to write a review on such a purchase before but as other peoples reviews influenced my decision I thought I'd add my opinion. I purchased the machine for Xmas and thus got the following Blu-Ray's for Xmas, the Matrix Trilogy and Batman: The Dark Knight. I have also rented some other titles. I have to say I am delighted with it, the loading of the discs does take slightly longer than your normal DVD but certainly nothing excessive. I can be a tad impatient so if it doesnt bother me I'm sure it wont you. My TV is only HD ready and not full HD but even so the picture is superb on all the discs I have watched so far, couldnt be more pleased. My TV is also Samsung and that also influenced my decision to get this player, I dont know if this makes a different or not. I also have had no problems (so far!) in playing any discs and I havent had to connect the player to the internet to do any upgrades. This is a bonus as this was something I was expecting to have to do having read other reviews/articles on Blu-Ray. Overall I am delighted with this purchase which I got directly from Amazon. If you are after a simple yet quality player I'd recommend this machine. It has proved very simple to set-up and (so far) hasnt caused a single problem.

5 out of 5 stars Blu-Ray does not limit you to Blu-Ray!   November 27, 2008

I have a 2-year old Sony NS3100ES receiver that plays every format and outputs stereo or 5.1 surround sound. The picture is clear and the sound is impeccable. Why would I go out and spend literally $300 to $1,000 for a player that plays Blu-Ray discs?

Samsung's BD-P1500 is sleek, compact and has so many more functions than other players. It will play regular DVD's, CD', SACD's, DVD-R, DVD-RW, home made DVD's and much more. The HDMI to HDMI cable is the best to use if your television has that port, as it carries the most data most efficiently (you can buy it here on Amazon). You can also connect to a regular TV or sound system with R/B/G cables (video) and R/W cables (audio). Whatever connection or system, it will play stereo to surround sound.

The entire world of Blu-Ray discs is another topic. They have a new optical disc format with over five and a half times the storage capacity of a standard DVD. This means you have more data and extras (like a storyboard guide at the bottom of the screen, display the title list, repeat play to specific points on the Blu-Ray disc, changing the camera angel of the movie, `bookmark' a specific scene spot and much more). There is also a LAN/Ethernet terminal output for updating software from Samsung (most electronic companies upgrade to improve quality over time).

The biggest selling point of all is the massive amount of data that can be played compared to regular DVD players. The picture is SO amazingly crisp (a Full 1080/24p True Cinema picture), I'd much rather prefer viewing a Blu-Ray disc over a regular DVD. The sound is crystal clear (Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD), either in stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 (something I never thought could be improved upon with my Sony DVD player). Now at this price, you can have the new experience of Blu-Ray entertainment. It seems that prices do come down and quality does go up.

Note: Most of the on-line rental companies (Netflix, Blockbuster, etc.) have most of the Blu-Ray discs in stock!

1 out of 5 stars Faulty item   November 24, 2008

We've had a bad experience with this item.

At first it would sometimes freeze at the menu. We would have to power it down and power it back up again and then it would work. We updated the firmware and thought the problem would go away.

But then it froze up more and more often, and finally now it won't play much correctly. It will get to the DVD/BD menu and then play the menu loop endlessly, responding only to On/Off and Eject (both on remote and on front panel). It won't even show the "No Disc" menu so we can't update to the new firmware from the menu, and it won't update from CD either.

We are going to go through the Samsung Repair/Return process and try to get it fixed or exchanged. We hope we can get a working one as the picture quality is great when it does work.

In the meantime though, it's just a very expensive and frustrating radiator.

Very good player and integrates nicely with Samsung TV. Only two gripes:

1. Incredibly slow to load and eject disks, I mean INCREDIBLY! You can make tea quicker.
2. Shipped not set to 1080p, watched my first Bluey thinking it was rubbish. Then read the book and realised my mistake. Watched film again. Why not ship this as it was intended?

good...hmmm upgrades this is now 2.0 bd live active with a firmware update from website or thro ethernet , NOW DIVX READY ALSO but doesnt like ntsc playback divx no good , why am i bigging this player up ??? divy
To get a true grasp on blu ray you must compare you cant go from just saying i think the picture is great ,Seriously this player is margionly better than PS3- which is so bad man honestly why do peeps say its amazing ,the xbox360 hd plyr is twice! as better for sharpness than ps3 and thats saying something but the 360s colouring and dimness shading is the same as its built in dvd which isnt enjoyable viewing for most people ,ive seen alot of hd blayers thro dif tvs and this player ok it is a nice standard pic and sound is v good! it has no definition its just plane looking its just like its just their so wot ,and you really want a film to look really stunning and crisp this player falls short in my view, its pretty smoothe as in the juddering in some blu ray playback ,altho fare doos it really does try and make it bold and bright colours it really wont make the high quality grade. theirs my 2 pence worth .standard watchable.

p.s if you order the one without the 2 dvds then you get the option to add them as a gift which is the same but you mite find like me you open the box and get a surprise anyways !!
