2 out of 5 stars Waste of money & time.   November 5, 2008
Mr. S. Kelly (England)
Canon have incorporated new ink tank technology in their new printers, seemingly to stop their customers from using anything other than Canon ink. Unfortunately for both the recent Canon printers I've struggled with lately, it just seems to prevent the user from printing anything.
I had a Canon Multi-function printer which I had to return because it said the tank tray was not the original - I'd only had the printer 2 weeks and it was the original Canon ink caddy. In this iP4500, from the start I got a message that 1 of the tanks was invalid and should be replaced - again this was the original Canon cyan with all the ink still in. After switching it on and off a few times it eventually works and I've put up with this for 2 1/2 months now in the vain hope that it would sort itself out. Instead, the error happens all the time now and my iP4500 is just a big squeaky desk ornament! If Canon think this will make customers buy their ink, they're probably right - for those of them whose printers work.
For the handful of pages and the couple of B/W CD labels I printed the quality was very good and fast and although it's big it looks smart.
I'm staying clear of Canon printers from now on though until they can make some hassle free versions, like a few years ago when Canon were the best. Shame on Canon for thinking customers would put up with this!

1 out of 5 stars bad idea   October 6, 2008

I've given this a low rating for the following reasons: one, the instructions are a bit of a mess. The instructions come in the form of a thick book and a separate sheet. In order to set up the printer, you have to somehow read the book and the sheet at the same time. It's unnecessarily fiddly. Why can't there be a single set of instructions? As it is, you have to keep jumping from one thing to another.

Secondly you won't be able to use this machine straight out of the box. For some reason it doesn't have a USB cable. Only when I was reading the setup instructions did I realise this, and I had to go out and buy one before I could use the printer (which I wasn't very happy about). You can't use the machine without a cable so why isn't one included?

So however good Canon products are, I would think twice before buying anything of theirs again: to sell a printer without the cable you need to operate it is unforgivable.

5 out of 5 stars Pixma iP4500   October 5, 2008

Bought this Canon Pixma iP4500 to replace my old Epson C62 which eventually gave up the ghost after nearly 7 yrs on a diet of compatible cartridges. I found the set up a little long winded, the biggest problem was working out how to disable both the anti virus system and the programs which open on start up. I have never had to do this before when installing either hardware or software. But eventually I had the printer up and running. So far the results have been most impressive, it is much quicker, quieter and has a far superior photo print quality than my old Epson. However one would expect this to be the situation on a printer 7 years newer. I have made several test prints of photos already printed by my old Epson using the same programs and print sizes. The results have been very impressive with both the colours and image sharpness being almost identical to those stored on my computer. Another excellent Canon product.

5 out of 5 stars Quality Photo Printing   September 19, 2008

This printer is just the best. Good quality build for the price and the print quality is second to none. Set up was simple and the bundled software is easy to use without having to read manuals. I have only printed a few 6 x 4 photos so far and I have to say that the image quality exceeds my expectations. At this price you would be mad to consider anything else!

5 out of 5 stars This Printer is like Wow!!! =]   September 17, 2008

Okay after reading so many bad reviews about other printers; I decided to go with this one, it came this morning and since I had nothing better to do I decided to play with my knew toy.. I printed 102 6x4 photo's 2 a5 and 1 a4 and the ink is still going; I really thought the ink would have ran out by now but the colour levels are still showing 3/4 full and 4/4 for the black inks. And the print quality is superb! I mean really really wow! I still have alot more photos to print (2years without a printer means I have a lot to print lol) I did think about going for an epson; I used to own one and it was fantastic till it broke =[ but the new epsons have really bad reviews about the ink running out and such so the canon seemed a good bet and it's been fine all day! I know it's early days still but it seems to be really good =]

The only problem is the plastic it's made out of has already got marks on it that wont wipe off =[ oh well eh I didn't buy to look at it lol =]
