Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The Forerunner 101 offers athletes and recreational walkers and runners an entry-level personal training device with GPS - operates on two AAA batteries. The Forerunner 101 stores lap histories for up to two years to provide an archive of workout performance over time. Users can retrieve lap data for previous workouts by date, week, month, or over a specific time interval. For business travelers who want to train on the road, the Forerunner 101 also doubles as a navigator. Users can mark their hotel as a specific location, see their current position on the plotter display, and follow an electronic breadcrumb trail back to their starting point. Working out with the Forerunner 101 means you're never alone in your personal training, because the unit provides a "Virtual Partner?". This unique feature allows you to set your training goal by configuring your Virtual Partner's pace and workout distance. You'll get a graphic perspective of your performance by viewing your pace in relation to your Virtual Partner's pace, so you can always see at a glance if you're keeping up or falling behind.

5 out of 5 stars Great value!   January 13, 2008

Easy to use and a great aid to running. Signal is brilliant where I am but can imagine it could disappear in dense wood or town area. But then take the warnings in the reviews and move up a model or two to improve this minor problem. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Great but can battle in dense plantations/near tall buildings   January 13, 2008

I have had mine for a bit over 2.5 years and have been very happy with it. It looks bulky but you don't notice it when you are running. Display is easy to read. Automatic history is useful for keeping check of how much training you have done. The bread crumb trail and direction arrow can be useful for navigating when running off road. Also nice that you can get breakdown of runs by laps (mine set a 1km intervals). Only problem (which is why I gave it 4 not 5 stars) is that it can lose signal a bit when in dense plantations or in cities with tall buildings. However, you can see when it is has lost position and can always add a guesstimate for the distance missed. The new 305 and 205 are supposed to be much better under such conditions. Also nice to be able to see approx pace you are running at and how far you have gone when running off road. At our club social run every week I am often asked how far we have gone. Very easy to use too. Just got to remember to keep replacing the batteries so it doesn't die on you. In general NiMh re-chargeables have worked well for me and it is only a few times that I have let them run down too much.

4 out of 5 stars Helps pass the time   December 8, 2007

Worth having especially as a motivational tool - the training partner really makes you run hard on your own. A little bulkier than I thought it would be but comfortable to wear. Gets me out the house on a wet night because you return knowing exactly what pace and distance you've run. Well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps you honest!   June 11, 2007

I use mine on every run, set to record each and every miles pace - I don't think the map features etc are much use but at the end of the run it does tell you accurately how far you went and how fast (or slow) your went. One key thing is that you do need to let it get lock before setting off and it does this better on the ground than it does on your wrist. The navigator mode isn't much to write about but it did get me back to my hotel in one very big and strange city. For the price its well worth it as an extra motivational aid - it will keep you honest about how far and fast you are running with the displays of weekly distance and average pace.

1 out of 5 stars Good unit.... When it works!   April 21, 2007

Basically, i bought a Forerunner 101 from Amazon for 61.40 on 10/04/2007 & after initially being fully satisfied with it, it soon developed a fault & was sent back to Garmin on 05/12/2007. I was sent a replacement unit & have regularly used it with satisfaction until recently. It is again shutting down involuntarily during operation & i spent an hour trying to find satellites without success. I feel that moisture, probably through perspiration, is somehow getting into the unit & is causing it's malfunction as the contacts to the battery are going green & crusty!

I'm really disappointed that again the unit has failed during it's 1 year guarantee & am now completely disillusioned & dissatisfied with this particular product. I phoned Garmin this morning for a refund or replacement to a more reliable model but they could only advise me to contact Amazon for a refund (who told me they cannot give me a refund as it's been over 12 months since i purchased it from them). The only other alternative they gave me was AGAIN to send the unit back for repair, but i'm not even sure if i'm going to waste my time doing that again only to receive a unit that will fail again in 6 months!

I'll stick to my original review of this unit WHEN IT WORKS... but unfortunately, 60 for something thats operates for 6 months if you use it as intended, is not good value.

(Below is my original review 21/04/07)

I reluctantly had to buy this after my Garmin GP801 GPS watch finally met it's maker in GPS heaven... the transmitter finally gave up transmitting after 4 years use, i tried an email to Garmin technical but their advice was to reset the device - how i could of done that i don't know, so that went in the bin & it was back on Amazon to help me find a replacement.
After reading other reviews for GPS training devices i quickly narrowed it down to Garmin again. I wasn't too bothered about downloading information to my p.c. or uploading gumpf, all i needed was a lightweight, reliable device to deliver run times, distance, avg. pace etc. My only worry, after owning a Garmin previously was that it would struggle to maintain satellite contact whilst on the wrist & in my case while running through the dense forest! I've been using it for about 3 weeks now & occasionally it loses a signal & gives the 'weak GPS signal' message but soon regains it & results at the end of hour long runs are all within 0.05 mile. I also chose the 101 because i could use AAA batteries off my charger, battery life is good - i'm getting about 10 hours off rechargables, but that maybe due to my batteries needing replacing so maybe 15 hours could be achieved. My only gripes are when using the Virtual Partner function, while running the updating of the distance being ahead/behind seems erratic... i'll look at it initially & it will read, for example, 200ft ahead, the next look a few seconds later will see me 400ft ahead! I've tried adjusting the smoothing but has little effect. At the end of the run it always re-adjusts itself to give an accurate analysis but during the run it can be mis-leading.
My other gripe... upon analysing a run through map mode, when scaling out a map to around 1-1.5 miles, detail can be lost through the map being offset on the screen. A 'pan' option would of been usful to centre the map.
