5 out of 5 stars Great value, easy to use, well-engineered and thought out product   November 17, 2008
NabLane (Lancs, United Kingdom)
After reading so many reviews of the TomTom and Garmin's I settled for the manufacturer associated with GPS since its inception and I have been thoroughly delighted with it up to now. I tried a colleague's widescreen TomTom but I found it too bulky and the general map display showed far too much detail, with irrelevant information dotted around the screen. Do you constantly need reminding of when you set off, or signal strength (surely if the map is moving when you are it is obvious there is a signal present).

It seems that every conceivable need and convenience has been well thought out on this Garmin unit. For example, the screen automatically changes the background colour of the map from white when it's daytime and ambient light is bright, to dark blue at night. You don't have to select a night-mode, or dim the screen - it all happens automatically!

The screen is easy to view from all angles - I personally like the screen pointed towards the rear of the car, rather than facing me. It matters not, the screen is still perfectly legible. The top part of the screen has a handy symbol to the top left for quick-checking of which roundabout junction to take and top-centre details either the road you are on, or the next turning to take together with the motorway junction and signage. The bottom shows time to arrival and current speed. There is a very handy sub-screen for trim information, detailing average, maximum speeds and distance travelled.

The unit locks-on to satellite signals by the time it has finished booting-up so you are ready to go in no more than 10 seconds. The unit even retained a signal once indoors and downstairs.

For the walker, this unit could also be taken with you out of the car to provide a precise map bearing for longitude and latitude in degrees, minutes and seconds to afford easy bearing-taking on an Ordnance-survey map. Altitude is also displayed and with a 4-hour battery life, it can be turned on as and when required when walking.

My father, who is a keen walker went and bought one the day after I got mine and loves it. He's not particularly computer literate, but finds the Garmin a breeze to use.

I would thoroughly recommend this unit - it is very clear that a large amount of time has been taken testing and designing this unit for real-world conditions and it performs perfectly. Re-calculation of route diversions is performed speedily and the directional information is very clear. Buy one!

2 out of 5 stars Great item shame about the company failing to support us in the purchase   November 17, 2008
Brother Sun Sister Moon. (London)
Lovely unit that works and is easy to use. Be warned Garmin DO NOT support free mapping updates if it's any longer than five minutes after you purchased it!! I bought mine in May 2008 and they updated the maps in September and wanted 60 from me!! Bearing in mind much of the update corrects errors in the existing mapping. It's a rip off. Being a loyal customer of Garmin for the last 20 years in Marine/Air and Road units, I complained to them. They basically said it's tough!! I wont be buying Garmin again on principle. If you want one buy a second hand one and dont worry about the updates.

1 out of 5 stars A mistake!   November 10, 2008
Caroline (UK everywhere)
Purchased a garmin upon recommendation but is the worse thing I could possibly have done. It takes an age to find satellites, isnt the whole idea of a satnav that you can just get in your car and go, and not have to waste time printing of maps and writing out your route...I still do that because I cannot trust it. I was standing in the middle of Paris on a bright sunny day and I left it on for 4 hours to find a satellite...nothing, kept trying over my holiday but was disappointed and frustrated so resorted back to an old map. It has taken me down bridleways, dead ends. Dont ever ask it to detour if you are stuck in a motorway jam, it will take you on a little drive around the block only to get back on the motorway at the same point. I asked garmin for help and was told to reset it, it was better for about a week before i was having the same problems again. In addition the in car charger will not stay in the cigarette lighter and will pop out approximately every minute on a drive home, worse on bumpy roads and slopes. My partner has the nuvi 200 and has similar problems (but only after i had already bought mine). Not worth the box it is in!

4 out of 5 stars Great SatNav if you update software   November 9, 2008
Phil (Reading, England)
I've used this unit for some weeks now and find it extremely accurate and easy to use. I bought it in preference to the navman because it was Mac compatible and as soon as I unwrapped it, I downloaded the Apple software for it and installed an update that took me from v3 to v4. Since then I found that it will take me to the door, including really obscure rural locations. It frequently wants to take me a different route to my routine but this is often a better way than I expected. So, overall, I'm very pleased with it.

5 out of 5 stars Unbeatable for the Money   October 26, 2008

Garmin Nuvi 250 Widescreen Satellite Navigation System with European Mapping
This is a fantastic Sat Nav that does all the basic things you need in order to get you from "A" to "B" in the UK or in Europe. I have used it extensively in England, France and also for a week in Spain. It has always been reliable and I have found it works very well. For example, I took it to Spain recently where on arrival in Malaga I was taken by taxi to pick up a car hire from an industrial park a couple miles from the airport. I felt completely lost in what seemed the back-streets and there wasn't a signpost anywhere in sight. However, once in the driving seat of the car hire, I switched on the system and it took no more than a minute to identify my location. It guided me faultlessly to a motorway access junction within a couple of minutes and, from there, on a 4 hour journey across southern Spain, including round and through the cities of Malaga, Seville and Huelva. Without it I know I would have been completely lost and stressed-out. For the money, I don't think its beatable.
