5 out of 5 stars The obvious choice   October 27, 2008

This review is pitched at those of you that want a sat nav for yourself / significant other. It is aimed at you because you're looking at the lower end of the price range and because if you don't already have a TomTom the chances are either you've got an old one that you've had enough of or you're only just getting round to buying one even though you've done very well thank you with a road atlas.

So, what's the difference between this and other 100 ones? OK, here's my experience. I've used 3 different forms of sat nav. The first is a 100 Garmin unit I bought my girlfriend. The second is a Blaunpunkt unit that was reduced to 80 from 160 and which I despised and subsequently returned for a refund. The third is this one.

Like the other cheap units I've used, the TomTom does a very good job of choosing a route for you and then getting you there at the time it predicts. That's the basics. The TomTom does it better for several reasons.

Firstly, unlike with the others, TomTom lets you see the route it's planned for you and allows you to edit out roads that you know are going to be a nightmare. If the recipient of the Sat Nav has already got faith in their own navigation abilities and is rather suspicious of the TomTom then this makes a huge difference - my girlfriend is still (six months later) bitching about the route her Garmin tried to take her through North Wales which she was unable to check beforehand. People can be quite judgemental against their SatNavs, especially when they think they know better. For the sake of a few extra pounds it's not worth buying anything less.

Secondly, set up on the device is a doddle - plug it in to the PC on day one for a charge / update and the software automatically loads on your PC and gives you numerous updating and registration options. You're also able to download a myriad of different voices to give your unit a bit more personality, from John Cleese to Darth Vader. Personally I went for Vicki - a local radio presenter from Sheffield. Sweet voice on her - will keep me quite happy until Mariella Frostrop puts her mouth where the money is so to speak and records her own instructions for the device.

Thirdly, it's a nice, unobtrusive unit. The screen gives ample room to view what's going on, it's easy to interact with and there's minimal frame round it to make the unit appear blocky, a fault of many other sat navs.

All in all, you can get cheaper units by different manufacturers but from my experience this one's by far the safest bet. It does what it does, it's well designed and I have total confidence in it. Can't say better than that.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD product no problem with my MAC   October 11, 2008
T Mind (UK)
I was planning on buying the version with the SD card but was shipped this so decided to keep it.
I had no problem updating it on my MAC and it seems to function well.
So far I am happy with it and glad that I kept it.
It's good for the price.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic Sat Nav.   August 21, 2008

This Tom Tom One V3 Europe Sat Nav is absolutely fantastic. Very easy to use. Clear instructions on how to set up and link to PC for updates. Bought this two weeks before going to France and it was so helpful - even my husband agreed!! I would highly recommend this.

4 out of 5 stars Non-existent Customer Support   August 12, 2008

This review applies to ALL TomTom units. Just like to let others know that, although I find the actual TomTom units very good,if you ever get a problem with your TomTom,your on your own. Their so called "Customer Service" is abysmal. If you manage to get through to them on the 'phone they are downright rude and will blame you for everything, never TomTom,the support on their website where you send them messages is just as bad,you may as well not bother,as you'll never hear back from them. You have been warned!!

5 out of 5 stars TomTom One v3 Euope - Great product   July 27, 2008

I wanted a simple and portable unit with none of the extras like bluetooth and mp3 capabilities so this was a perfect match.

Well built so it will last on my trips around Europe, in the box there is a car charger, usb cable and cradle.. the only thing missing from the box was a case but the proper TomTom one is around 11 so this was not such a problem..

Few pointers.
- when you get the unit connect it straight to the PC, load the software (there is no CD this is on the device and should auto prompt when you connect first time) and sit back for about 2-3 hours whilst it updates pretty much everything on the device
- As there is no external memory (only the internal 1gb) do not expect to be able to download lots of voices, map type and other funky items.. in fact i suggest you keep the system as clean as possible to prevent any map upgrade issues in future. I found out of the box the device had 36mb left but after running all the updates this is now 70mb (go figure)
- the maps on the box are out of date, the file is over 800mb in size and you have 30 days to update once it is connected to the TomTom service online, after this no more free map updates.
- Remember to backup the system using the provided software before doing anything

Have loaded my favourites and used it in Switzerland and Italy so far with much succes... this is the same device that is normally provided by Avis when you rent a car but these are very out of date so this purchase will save me time and money
