2 out of 5 stars Be aware of the lens...   August 30, 2008
D.Angel (London)
After a long research I relied on so many great comments that was made for this camera. It would be the first time I've ever spent this much money on a digital camera, not only I wanted a camera where I could `point and shoot' but also a camera that takes great pictures with lots of details. So this camera almost had everything I wanted.

Although I was very aware of the problems some people have experienced with this camera, especially as some have said the lens had fallen out and how Canon had not sealed the lens unit properly, I hoped everything would turn out to be ok once I receieved it.

Soon as the camera came, I tested it out and took a few pictures which seemed great so far, the pictures turned out to be amazing just as I thought.

With the plan of moving away soon abroad, I wanted to take a good camera with me before I go, but I was so wary of the comments made about this camera, mostly about the lens. I researched once again and read that in humid or wet conditions is where you should be very careful - it's very easy for the moisture to get trapped inside the lens protector mechanism and if not dried out those very small sprins will not last very long. This has then got me worried, I wish I made a little more research before buying this camera. I don't want to own a camera I have to be constantly careful with all the time and give extra money to buy more things to keep it protected, the cameras pricey enough!

However, the pictures on Canon Powershot G9 are amazing, it's a very easy camera to use so you don't have to be professional to use this. I do wish I had no concerns with this camera so I can be a happy owner, but I don't want to be constantly worried all the time over it!

4 out of 5 stars Great Second Camera   August 27, 2008

Almost so flexible and portable that it is preferable to taking out the heavy SLR. Very nice to handle. No real competition in the market for something like this. The images are excellent. They really sparkle.

Only real issue is that I find the speed to take a second picture to be slow. No slower than another compact but its still a bit irritating compared to an SLR

3 out of 5 stars Just one fatal flaw...   August 26, 2008

Such a good camera, with just one major design flaw.

In any mode other than manual this is an excellent camera with easy to use controls giving great results.

BUT... When using this on manual the aperture and shutter cannot be changed at the same time! This defeats the entire point of having a manual mode and what is even more irritating is that the ISO dial (which could be hidden in a menu) is exactly where the shutter or aperture control COULD be. What you're left with is using an impossibly fiddly combination of buttons which forces you to use AV mode.

Which I wouldn't mind if I didn't specifically buy this camera BECAUSE of the M(anual) mode.

I really hope Canon realise the error of their ways and come up with a way to remap the buttons because it seriously degrades what would otherwise be a near perfect camera.

5 out of 5 stars Look no further, people have done your research   August 13, 2008

Look at the other reviews, there is no reason to give this camera anything less than 5 star.

Battery lasts ages
Picture quality is so clear
Optical zoom function is very decent
Video options are great Time lapse mode is so cool.

I cannot belive how many functions have been packed into it.

Researched this camera for ages and I do not regret my purchase for a second!

5 out of 5 stars Great compact   August 12, 2008

I can only add my voice to the chorus. I liked this camera already reading the specs, and I loved it the moment I got it in my hands. It is solid, fast, elegant, easy to use, flexible (going from completely manual to automatic). The pictures it takes are really good quality. I cannot spend enough time talking about the results with the macro, since I got this camera I took pictures of every flower I could find on my path (even in Manchester city centre!). I could shoot my friend performances in semi darkness with higher level of ISO and/or regulating the intensity of the flash light to a minimum to minimize disturbance. The camera movement correction is really good, infact shooting free hand with long times still gives good results but the camera warns you that you are risking it. For the non purist there are color controls that allow you to shoot in B&W, sepia or accentuating different primary colors and light controls that allow to remove overtones introduced by surrounding lights. There are 3 different ways of focusing from face-recognition to manual focus. It can shoot an indefinite number of pictures....

I think that the description "even if you are an amateur you'll want to take better pictures with this camera" is absolutely centred. It did it for me.
