Could be really good, but isn't January 4, 2009 A. Burnett 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Easy to use? Yes. Quick? Definitely. Good quality scans? Not at all! The problem with this scanner is that you have no control over the exposure of the image - every single slide I scanned came out over exposed with complete loss of any detail. I agree with some of reviews stating that if all you need is a quick and simple way of converting your slides to digital and do not want to print any of them out (and don't really care about the quality) then, I guess, this product is accepatable. I, however, wanted to be able to print a few of them and the results are far too poor quality for me to do that. I had far better results using a 10 lightbox and simply taking photos of the illuminated slides. I'm going to hang onto mine, however, in the hope that Veho bring out a software patch which will allow you to control the exposure. ************** After writing the above review I tried the scanner with some negatives (the above refers to scanning slides) and it does work a LOT better with negatives although the automatic white balance works only some of the time. Which is great if you have lots of pristine negatives. Unfortunately most of mine are damaged beyond repair or missing.
Poor quality January 2, 2009 Mark Hammond 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I guess you get what you pay for! I found the output on B&W negatives was acceptable, but colour rendition from colour negs was variable andf the final image was a bit "flat". Colour slide reproduction is simply appalling though - very contrasty images, colours all wrong - what more can I say! Overall, despite every effort in cleaning the glass scan-bed area with both the supplied cleaning pad and my air blowers and camera brush, I could not get rid of dust in the system so every scan came out with grey spots. I guess there is dust or grit elsewhere in the system, but as you only have access to the scan-bed through the film holder slot, there's nothing you can do about it apart from more post-production editing in e.g. Photoshop, etc. I'm afraid mine is going back to the shop for a refund.
Pleasantly Surprised December 26, 2008 J. Gaul (Kent, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I installed this scanner with ease on a Windows XP laptop and within an hour had two 35mm films scanned in. After a while I got into a routine, getting familiar with the loading, button pressing, transferring etc and would expect to get a 36 frame film scanned in about 15 minutes in future. I had been apprehensive about how the scans would come out having seen the mixed reviews but I was pleasantly surprised. I would say I am fairly demanding on sharpness and colour accuracy; I am a mid-range SLR camera user rather than a snapshot photography, and I found the scans certainly good enough for displaying on the laptop screen at full size. The results at this size are on a par with viewing shots direct from my Canon SLR; zooming in reveals the scans are less sharp but this is irrelevant unless you want to crop photos down before viewing. I would have given this scanner 5 stars if if were not for one issue; every scan has a sliver right along one edge that looks like it is scanning the edge of the film holder. This is easily removed by cropping (I use Irfan view as it is quick to use) but slightly annoying - I have yet to work out if it is a misalignment that I can correct in positioning the holders in the slot of the unit. On balance I would say this scanner is worth having because it does the job with reasonable speed and quite acceptable quality.
What it says on the tin... December 20, 2008 W. Mohr (Berkshire, England) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Well, I hope I can resolve the clash between the lovers and haters of this item. This is a basic product for those who want to digitise a whole bunch of snaps and are not precious about the quality. If what is important to you are the memories a photo brings back and you have a whole bunch of negatives to crunch through then this is for you as long as you are happy to trade quality for speed. If not, buy the top-end Plustek with all the bells and whistles. If you have a lot of negatives to do though, you'll have to wait until you retire and have enough time to scan them all!
Poor Product, Poor Support December 15, 2008 Duncan Davidson (Edinburgh, Scotland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This product is a nice idea and price but in reality is not worth it. When first used and the slide tray inserted a piece of glass was ejected out the other side and the slides would not scan with the software continually returning errors. Veho technical support said return it because of the glass, no mention of the software errors. Amazon supplied a replacement very promptly. This one unfortunately still had same software error despite a complete uninstall/re-install and download of latest driver/software. To date I have had no response from Veho technical support.
