4 out of 5 stars Great value for money   December 7, 2008

The time had arrived when our eleven year old 14" Matsui just had to go. It had developed a couple of faults and could only display five channels. Channel 4 was S4C (and my Wife doesn't speak Welsh) and channel 5 had a peculiar very low sound volume problem.

After much deliberation and review reading I opted for the little known make of Polaroid in the 15" size. It arrived quickly from Amazon and was left in the box till we were feeling a little better after a severe bout of flu which is actually still with us.

Anyway, I thought it would be easy to set up without reading the instructions. Wrong choice. After failing to get it up and running, I was forced to read the English Section of the handbook. The problem was that Polaroid had put a small ON/OFF Mains Switch on the back of the TV. Once this was pressed, it was simple to get the set up and running.

I think that this is really very good value for money and having read the reviews, I was expecting a poor sound quality. I am perfectly happy with the sound quality as it is far better than I expected.

The picture display is not as good as I expected as the vertical angle of view is critical. If a five foot tall person and a six foot person sit side by side near the set, the shorter person has the better picture. I have never seen a viewing angle as critical as this before. We will be viewing this TV in the kitchen with the TV sitting on a worksurface beside a window and at a distance of about fourteen feet. I will probably have to put something under the front edge of the base to give a better picture. If you stand up the picture goes paler. Shame that the base hasn't got a tilt device fitted. Still, a bit of thin wood under the front edge will sort it out.

The handbook is huge and heavy even though there are only 40 pages in English. It is half an inch thick and weighs about nine ounces.

There were lots of interconnect leads provided (unwanted in our case) plus two mains leads but no lead to connect the TV to your aerial wall socket. Still, I already had the Matsui one, so no catastrophe there.

According to the specifications, the contrast ratio is 400:1 and the Brightness is 250. This might seem poor in comparison to other sets, but in reality the pictue is great once you realise that viewing is height sensitive. The Power consumption is quoted as 35 Watts when ON and less than 1 Watt when on Standby. So no problems there.

Having played about with the picture and sound settings and lifted the front edge of the base a fraction, I am now very happy with the set. It is after all only the Kitchen set and as a bonus it provides about 50 TV channels and 25 radio channels.

I only gave the set four stars due to the vertical viewing problem.

For the money, it would be very hard to beat the Polaroid 15" set and it looks good in white in the kitchen..

5 out of 5 stars What a cracker   November 28, 2008

I endorse everything thats been written so far concerning this TV. Purchased for bedroom use. It arrived this morning, well packed, no damage and on time by City Link - No probs. Unpacked and working within minutes. Removed the annoying stickers around the screen and stored the 'spare' leads away safely (If I needed these, I would have purchased them and the cost of the TV could have been reduced accordingly). Yes, the sound could be improved from the rather 'tinny' noise it tends to emit even with the treble set to 0% and bass set to 100% - it even sounds the same with the settings reversed, but then SO WHAT!!!.
Overall, I think this TV is extremely good value for the price and would recommend it to anyone looking for a Bedroom/Kitchen tv.With a multitude of connections in the back, it is an extremely versatile and flexible piece of kit.

3 out of 5 stars Bargain price, great for the kitchen   November 24, 2008

I was quite upset that the delivery man left this TV at the bottom of my garden in the rain despite a note on the door asking for it to be left with a neighbour.
The TV is a doddle to set up; you really don't need to read the manual, although I did. It comes with a plethora of leads which I will never use. The unit has a very wide variety of connections on the back including a CI slot for Top-up TV. Again, as a kitchen TV I would rather have the set even cheaper than pay for all these features. At 15" it is hardly likely to be used as a lounge TV.
Don't get me wrong, this is a great TV for the price, and it looks good too. BUT what really lets it down is the sound. There are several choices of sound, surround, music, rock, live and user but all are very tinny. Still it is only for the kitchen.
Picture quality is excellent but, as others have noted, the viewing angle could be wider.
Overall I am happy with the item at this great price. I just wish it sounded better.

I took a real flyer on this. Not known for their TV's I was more than a little apprehensive when I ordered this for our kitchen. I am pleased to say it was a good buy. Setting up and tuning could not have been easier. Picture quality is good though viewing angles are a little tight.
The TV looks good and I advise anyone who is looking for a wall mount to go to Wilko, 15.00 for a good bracket that swivels and tilts. Some DIY stores want 40 plus.
If you want a Kitchen, Bedroom or Study TV - this is the one.

I decided to buy this for our kitchen, on chance, after reading other reviews and must say I'm very pleased with it, so much so, that I also decided to buy the 19" model for our dining room, (yes I know, very sad isn't it!!). The picture and sound are really good and yes, ok, if viewed from below (40 degrees or less, like previous comments) then, for whatever reason, the screen appears to be very dark (so don't sit on the floor to view it!) but otherwise I think they are excellent value for money. I recommended them to friends who are equally please with their purchases.
