Okay for the first few weeks but... December 30, 2008 Florrie 22 (UK) Would not recommend this product. I have had it for about 6 months now. It was a gift as my old Sony VCR finally gave up the ghost after many years of service. This Samsung combi worked fine for the first few weeks but then the dvds started to pixelate & return to the start (I can see others have had the same problem so it must be a common fault) & sometimes it would say there was no disc. When I tried the discs in my other (cheaper) DVD player they worked fine. Also the video recorder is hopeless. It played a couple of tapes okay but now every time I put one in there's a 'foggy' bit running through (all my tapes have the same problem so I can't play any of them any more - so disappointing). I've tried cleaning the heads but to no avail. AVOID!!!
Bad Item October 21, 2008 George (Croydon. Surrey) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the item that doesn't play without breaking up and unless the one I bought was a one off, leave alone!! don't waste your money.
No... OK, maybe... June 26, 2008 sweavo (York, UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
After only six weeks' ownership, both the DvD and the VHS drives are failing. The DvD froze on a perfectly clean disc, and the VHS has a slipping belt, and can't get more than half way through a tape. So sad that what seemed like the perfect solution for watching our old collection of movies while saving on SCART leads has so quickly turned into merely another contribution to the world's WEEE problem. :-( ** update ** Hmm, it will let me edit the review but not change the rating. I discovered that the shelf in the media centre was inadequately ventilated and things were getting warm in there. Since improving cooling we've had a lot less trouble (Though it still crashes on the occasional DvD and still slips on VHS tapes, though the tapes are usually still watchable). Upgrade to three stars! Oh and I should mention the Region-free ness worked fine with a little googling!
Good value and multi region right out of the box April 27, 2008 John A. Clouston (Belper, Derbyshire United Kingdom) 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
I have some old VHS tapes that I still watch from time to time - my old VCR packed up so I either needed a new machine or otherwise buy the old tape titles on DVD. I didn't fancy spending on new DVDs so I checked out who still does VCRs and spotted this Samsung. Setting it up was very easy as I had previously had a VCR attached to my TV with a Scart cable. I just plugged the RF cable in as per the manual, hooked up the Scart, powered it up and it went into Auto set up. Two minutes later it was done. It had tuned to the TV stations and set the date and time. I didn't need to go into the menu at all. This is the simplest set up I've ever experienced when hooking up new kit, so top marks to Samsung. I also found that I could play a US format tape immediately. I didn't need the multi-region hack that other users had tried. The only minor irritation is the noise. It's perhaps a little noisier than other VCRs I've had, but this isn't noticeable most of the time. In short this unit is great value, easy to set up and I'm very pleased with it. ***UPDATE*** Early experience with this unit was very good, but it's gradually become a disappointment and I'm going to ask the supplier for a refund. VHS playback has become variable and at times impossible - cleaning the heads or adjusting the tracking makes no difference. Even DVD playback is sometimes spoiled by the picture becoming pixellated or stalling completely.
Even a technophobe like me .... April 27, 2008 C. Leboulte 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
was able to work Mr Shoesmith's hack to play multi region dvds. I found it easy to set up and it plays region 1 and 2 discs beautifully. Vcr also easy to use and record/playback very good quality. Extremely pleased with this for the money!
