nearly bought it October 9, 2008 carman (Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Was going to buy this cus pc world selling them for about 85. Now I know why after reading all your reviews. Probably gonna be panasonic or daewoo now. Daewoo can copy divx to hard drive.
Seems a great machine so far! October 7, 2008 Niall Macaulay (Glasgow) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Nice machine for the price excellent value when you consider all the features - I haven't had to refer to the manual, Some posting negative reviews here maybe didn't know what they were buying, i.e. those that complain they can't watch something and record something else. This machine is aimed at people who have a Freeview TV who can put their recorder into standby and don"t want to spend more for dual tuners they won't need, like me.. Others complain they cannot select the quality setting to recordfrom the digital tuner. If they bothered to read the manual they would discover the reason is that the Samsung determines the incoming program detail level and records accordingly - a very nice feature. Maybe there are better machines out there for the money but I certainly wouldn't complain about this one... very pleased with it.
a load of SH853M! August 7, 2008 M. V. Mager (uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As a long time Humax-PVR owner, I decided to buy something more up to date. This was the biggest load of RUBBISH that I have EVER bought! SUPER unfriendly! Out of the box I got a 'no signal' message from my NEW digital Arial. You have to switch it from analogue yourself. All the channels were found. Several times it would (black screen) freeze up, and had to unplug it. The EPG has a mind of its own, scrolling a page at a time instead of line by line, THEN once warmed up, it lags so you cant select what you want easily! YOU have to adjust the summer time setting! We tried to record some programs, and despite the menu confirming so, we had NO programs recorded the next day! (Yes I did leave it on!) Luckily I still have the Humax connected! The buttons on the remote are incredibly small. I nearly threw this heap of junk out of the window several times! After three weeks of mayhem and frustration, I packed it the box and told Currys what I thought of it, and where to shove it! I paid 70 extra and now have a SONY! Its a shame that Humax don't make such a device. I am really glad that I did this before 28 days was up as your rights change drastically after that period. Cheers Mario
This machine is a disaster! June 29, 2008 Mr. A. Murray (United Kingdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this machine and so wish I hadn't. The purpose of buying the machine was that its supposed to be a DVD with Freeview channels. Where I live there is no decent analogue channels so the freeview was important. However, if you want to actually record something, you have to go through a really complex programming process and then Switch off the machine and place it into stand-by mode. This is the sort of thing people did with the earlier versions of VHS video recorders. The effect of this is that if you set-up a timed recording, you switch off the DVD player and therefore you cannot actually watch any other TV in the mean-time, or you have to remember to switch the DVD player off later, in time for the timer recording. The manual that comes with it is dreadful too, it makes no sense on important areas, and yet spends a great deal of time on the more obvious areas such as how to open and close the drawer to insert a DVD! I'm now having to buy another PVR so that I can actually have the functionality I thought i was buying with this machine. My advice - don't buy this, this is the first time I've ever bought a Samsung product and frankly - it will be the last one I ever buy too!
Samsung DVD-SH853M - Samsung's Lemon June 25, 2008 Allo Tosh Get A Toshiba (UK) My preference has always been Toshiba with Phillips as a backup. I am on my fourth Samsung unit. The first did not respond to the remote, the second would not read DVDs and the 4th had faulty remote and dropped the picture when switching to Audio Description. Originally bought the SH853M because of the spec and a few good reports. However, it is largely an infuriating item, sometimes working, sometimes telling you it is working when it is not and other times just plain useless. The EPG is very limited [4 channels prer page] and laboriously slow to load and progress through. The response to the remote control has a long delay which causes you to make errors. Copying is a hit and miss affair. Most times OK but now and again the percent rate is noticably slow. Usually this means it is not recording properly. Afterwards the disc cannot be read and is unuseable. On the plus side, recordings are good and the tuner pulls in all channels. For the money, there are far better HDDs around, some with dual tuners. Samsung's 'Pause Live TV' is not. You have to hit record then play it back. All in All, disappointing and I am back to Toshiba.
