1 out of 5 stars Bought this around christmas 2007 - a real Turkey!   January 7, 2009

I bought the Thompson pvr in December 2007, i didn't read any reviews on this item before buying, this was my first mistake. I chose the Thomson pvr as the price was reasonable at 99 and i thought Thompson was a big enough brand name to get this kind of kit right with having the Tivo model out years ago- big mistake, as mentioned numerous times in other reviews the fan noises and disc spinning noises were horrendous (I was using this item in the bedroom and the noises were constant, even when on standby)I use the word noises because the noise was constantly changing, the fan, disc or both would often sound like they were changing up a gear or down a gear, if i wasn't so disapointed with my purchase it would have been funny.
Other problems i had were similar to other peoples reviewed problems, i found it amusing reading other peoples reviews and found myself saying mine did that, and that, oh and that, in fact if i was filling in a bingo card of mutual faults i'd have a full house. My Thompson pvr finally died just out of warranty, the disc had froze completely with me unable to watch the 53% of programmes/films i'd recorded on to it.
Having read reviews and taken tips from the gadget show i'm now the proud owner of a Humax pvr9150t, what a fab piece of kit, well built, a lot quieter while operating and silent in standby. It's a case of good riddance to thompson i'm afraid, and a very warm welcome to Humax.

1 out of 5 stars locking up   December 31, 2008

The box is nice to look at but hangs up constantly. I have a very high signal but it still fails to record. If the box is recording a program and you try to watch another program is locks up instantly.

The menu and hand set are easy to use. I decided to borrow a Humax for a few weeks.WoW? it never failed to work never locked up and did everything I wanted it to and was very quiet.

Dont buy this box unless its all you can afford. Great idea shame about the software.

1 out of 5 stars What a shame   December 8, 2008
Mr. W. F. Walton (Leeds, UK)
All in all the Thomson PVR 160gb promised to be a good piece of kit. I purchased the box for my Mum as a Christmas present back in November 2007. The remote is substantial and as I have a Sky HD box also made by Thomson I was confident in the brand.

Overall the box worked well, there were a few occasions that a restart was required, but the menus are well laid out and the series record is good. However as the box approached 13months old things started to go wrong. This week the box refused to turn on and just flashed orange. Looking at the forums this is caused by a hardware error. Unfortunately as the box was more than 12months old it was out of warranty.

Thomson don't support the uk market anymore (according to their website) so the box has gone in the bin.

Looks like my Mums getting a different brand box this year.

1 out of 5 stars Thomson Freeview Recorder - Save your money!   December 7, 2008
Disappointed (UK)
Worked well for the first few weeks that we had it but then it started to go wrong. The 160GB capacity appeared reduced to only about 30GB (with nothing recorded)despite reinstallations and many calls to the helpline. When it would record programmes they often wouldn't play or got stuck half way through. After about 5 months it completely stopped working. Absolute waste of money. Save up for a Sony or something similar the Thomson one is just awful!
