The best one I've had - by a country mile January 3, 2009 Campbell J. Smith (in a champagne Supernova in the sky) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having purchased no less than five of these machines in the last three years, all returned to the Retailer as they were over-rated, of poor quality and hopelessly inadequate (two of them were Wharfedales, from which I expected a lot more having read loads of decent reviews), I opted to spend a little more on getting what I hoped was a better quality HDD recorder. Boy, am I glad I stumbled upon this beauty! First of all, compared to Comet ( 238 at the time) I got this machine for 150 or thereabouts. Secondly, it looks and feels good, and the manual, despite it's 95 pages, has thankfully not been "translated". No offence intended, but due to it having so many functions, it's better to be written in proper English. Thirdly, and most importantly, it is of very good quality and so far I've found nothing to moan about. I'm learning new tricks by the day and I don't have a bad word to say about the machine. And thanks to Amazon, I got it within 48 hours of purchase despite requesting super saver delivery.
Complex made simple December 17, 2008 J. Hutchinson (England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bought machine for 74 year old mother in law to replace her old broken down VCR. Initial set up easy but when we looked at the instruction manual thought we had made a mistake, however once we had filtered out the basic stuff which is all she wanted and written it onto a A4 sheet of paper she was away and recording / watching the following day. She's even started experimenting and is really enjoying herself. The unit is top quality, picture perfect and a great machine for the money. Amazon customer service second to none, best market prices and first class delivery service. I am now considering buying one for myself in the New Year and will demote the VCR to the bedroom for when I need to watch a videpo tape.
ITS NOT SKY PLUS!!! December 12, 2008 Bentos (Cleckheaton, West Yorkshie) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is my 3rd Tosh HDD recorder. The first cost over 600, and its still going strong. All 3 have been fantastic, top functions and never gone wrong. The reviewer who say you cant record a channel whilst watching another needs to get Sky Plus, how does he expect to receive 2 channels at the same time? Thats why you have a twin LNB on a Sky dish, and are we in the same time zone as the other reviewer? By that I mean when he talks about waiting for a minute to start up, is that the same minute that contains 60 seconds? There really is no pleasing some people. 5 STAR MACHINE!!!!!!
Great quality - poor interface November 17, 2008 NeilC (Windsor, UK) 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
Bought this a few days ago. First time that I've used a HDMI upscaler with my HD TV and I have to say I was amazed by the results. Absolutely superb picture for standard definition freeview. The unit is also quiet and runs well. As other reviewers have mentioned the major drawback is the interface. Having used TiVo when I lived in the states it amazes me that no manufacturer can replicate such a straight forward experience. For this unit, the guide won't let you select channels, the channel switching is slow and the menu interfaces not intuitive. I'm sure with a bit of practice and a good read of the 70+ page manual (!) I could get better at it, but the wife will never put up with that so it's most likely going to go back. BTW actually bought it from a Comet store but its 40 cheaper on Amazon so won't be making that mistake again! Also, Comet are an absolute rip-off for the cables, 29.99 was the cheapest one they had, but the guy tried to sell me one that cost 100? Incredible. This particular unit comes with an HDMI cable which was a nice touch.
Poorly designed November 9, 2008 K J Noakes 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
Great picture quality, great features, but let down really badly by poor interface design. So... you can review channels from the program guide, but you can't then slect the channel you want to view from the program guide, you have to exit the program guide and type in the channel number! there are lots of other badly designed features but this one to me was a show stopper and had me taking the recorder back....if you are recording a channel you CANNOT watch another channel whilst it's recording.
