Product Description LG?s RH-398H is great for anyone thinking about upgrading their VCR to a DVD player/recorder. The RH-398H is able to record several hours of video to DVD or to its internal 160 GB hard drive. It'll even record videos in 1080p high definition, so you can enjoy them on an HD TV! It?s compatible with DVD-R/RW, DVD R/RW, DVD-RAM and dual-layer DVD R formats, and has five recording modes, allowing you to archive up to 21 hours of video to DVD or 463 hours to its internal hard drive. The TimeShift function means you can record a programme, pause and then pick up from where you left off, while its USB 2.0 port is ideal for playing multimedia stored on external hard drives and MP3 players. The RH-398H even has a Freeview tuner for receiving digital TV channels, and an HDMI socket, making the RH-398H the perfect complement to your audio/video system.

Design Defects December 31, 2008 ACK (Lancaster, UK) I have just returned my unit to Amazon because in my opinion this product has a number of design defects, some of which are mentioned in other reviews. 1. It cannot record Freeview radio. I checked with LG. No mention of this in any advertising, brochure, specification or manual. 2. If a timer recording starts while you are watching another recording it switches to the about-to-be-recorded program and you lose your place. 3. It invariably puts the subtitles on while recording and you cannot turn them off. 4. I cannot make it create R+DL disks that will play on this or any other machine. 5. The User documentation is very poor. It's a pity because it is easy to set up and use.
Some items to consider when buying this recorder December 7, 2008 Anon 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I upgraded my analogue hard drive recorder to the LG RHT398H along with upgrading my tv to Toshiba 37XV555DB - 37" Widescreen 1080P Full HD LCD TV. DVD's look great played through this player to my new TV, the 250 GB's will certainly hold plenty and it does not seem to be very noisy when it starts up but I'm only really leaving this feedback to make you aware of the limitations. There only appears to be the one digital tuner which means you can not watch something else while it is recording. Not so much of a problem as the TV comes with a digital tuner, but this means you have to keep changing controllers. The 8 day electronic program guide is bit basic, you have to do a lot of scrolling. The player has some interesting flaws. It stops playing a pre-recorded program while is starts recording another. It also does not appear to track where you stopped watching a program. This is a pain if you are in the middle of a film. I have also had the issue with the subtitles mentioned in another review, but it is easy to turn off and seems to be intermittent? I nearly took a risk on buying one of the LG widescreen tv's, but this purchase confirms that LG are truly focussed on the price concious market and may not be the best value solution.
What formats will it play ? November 17, 2008 David Shakespeare (London UK) 0 out of 4 found this review helpful

Nearly Great August 16, 2008 P. Dinneen 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
This would be a great little model except for 2 annoying things. I keep having to switch off subtitles.. I have used set up .,.. but the darn things keep coming back. Second problem is Series Link does not work for me in the EPG... which is a huge disappointment.. ( but it could be something not quite working ? ) Other than that it is a great unit... looks nice... got powerdown mode.. and I like the menu to find your recordings...
FANTASTIC-Great for Downloaded music/films with no messing August 9, 2008 Ms. S. C. Attaway (Nottingham) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I bought this specifically because I like to stream my movies and music from my PC (saves messing about with discs etc) I used to have my media files on my external harddrive and stream them from my Laptop to my Home system, but was alot of messing about every time (plugging everything in etc). I have also has wireless media players etc but again found them to be unreliable and dont always want to have to have my pc switched on to view anything, as we're all power conscious now coz of price rises). I read about this having a USB input and bought it. I now simply plug my external harddrive into the USB port, no wires, no messing about. You do need to have a powered harddrive though, as the USB port does not give enough power, my external harddrive was bus powered, but I solved this by spending 6 on a mains powered USB hub, and now it works a treat, I simply plug my Harddrive into the hub and off i go. It has played all my movies and music with no problems so far. One thing that could be improved would be some form of search feature to search your media files, as its hard to find what you want if you have alot on there, but this is minor and would/has not put me off. I now have everything I want to watch or listen to in one place, without having to have a separate device to be able to do so, with only one remote control and no extra cables. It does take a little while to index all of the files for browsing on your tv, about a minute or so, but this depends on how many files you have i suppose. I have given this 4 stars, and missed off the 5th coz of the lack of search feature. You can add items to a 'program list' which acts as a playlist, but you cannot save this list for future use, you can however save the 'progam list' if you have copied your music to the dvd recorders internal harddrive Definately recommend.
