Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Simply put, this makes the other satellite providers plus and HD box look pre-historic. The Humax box has been rolled out with some amazing new features and will blow your socks off. can be used in freesat or self tuned mode. Humax have reinvented the PVR and it is brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the wait   December 24, 2008

After trying to buy one of these for months, I finally received mine this week. Was it worth the hassle?? Definitely. Straight from the box, the Humax plugged into my Sky HD cables. It even told me that one of them wasn't working; a fault that was cured in minutes. It then self-tuned very quickly &,after hooking up the HD cable, I was watching satellite TV again.

The whole thing is QUIET in operation (take note Thomson!!) & has a great LCD display on the front of the box, which is very easy to read from anywhere in the room (nice touch)

The remote is nice & robust, although some of the buttons are hard to sort when your vision is less than 20/20.

The manual is a pain......I know that Humax have pulled all the stops out to get this box on the market, but to have a useless manual doesn't do it justice. You would expect to be told how to cancel recordings or set up series links, but, believe me, I haven't found them yet!! These features are there, but you have to find them yourself.

Of course, the picture & video quality is first-rate. I was watching the immortal Rab C Nesbitt last night (recorded) & I honestly thought it was in HD. It wasn't: the upscaler had converted it to almost HD quality from a standard BBC2 source. Brilliant !!

My advice is to find one of these beasts as quickly as possible & kick your present satellite supplier into touch. The manual may be a chore, but the box itself certainly isn't. It may be a bit more expensive now due to the current economic climate, but it's a heck of a bargain.

3 out of 5 stars not as good as sky+ hd but worthwhile to get away from awful sky customer treatment   December 12, 2008

Upside: get away from sky, same functionality as sky+, hd channels, quality product, no monthly fee; Downside: not as usable as sky+, doing everything is trickier and less intuitive; Overall: don't worry about getting one of these quickly but worthwhile, thank you humax

5 out of 5 stars Not perfect (and not mythical) but very, very good   December 8, 2008

Well I got one of these beasts last Friday courtesy of Argos, and I like it a lot, especially as compared with the Sky+ which it replaced. It's a better machine in almost every way and of course there is no further charge once you've bought it. It does have faults (for instance it won't record the buffer if you start to record a program you are watching) but hopefully most of them will be sorted by future software releases. I'm glad I got it.

5 out of 5 stars Twin cable not required   December 2, 2008

Although twin cables can be used if you already have sky+ they are NOT required.

This clever humax supports SCD (single cable distribution) otherwise known as Unicable.

You do still need to upgrade your LNB for a unicable one, about 70, but it will act as a twin LNB and send the 2 signals down the single existing co-ax at alternate frequencies.

The humax can then assign 1 tuner to each frequency, and away you go.

5 out of 5 stars Don't be put off by the word of warning!   November 25, 2008

I have not yet received my Humax Foxsat PVR, but just wanted to set the record straight regarding costs of installing an additional cable, which will be required in order to record and view at the same time.

All you need to do is replace your existing LNB (the receiver bit that the satellite dish points at) with one that has two or four cable outputs (twin or quad LNB), which are available on Amazon, then run a new co-axial cable into the house, following the route of your existing cable (or a new twon coax cable). This can be done on your own, or an independent digital installer could do it for a lot less than 410.

These links are an example of what you would need, but there are alternatives available on amazon.
Sky Quad LNB
Sky+ SkyHD 10m Black wf65 twin coax Wiring kit for Dish LNB to satellite receiver

BTW, if you went for a quad LNB with four cables (or two twin), you could run Sky+ and Freesat+ off one dish.
