No miracles, but pretty amazing all the same August 27, 2008 David P (UK) People who slate this because it doesn't pick anything up on the supplied min-aerial are just expecting too much - it can't work miracles. If you can't get a good digital signal on a portable with an indoor aerial in your area, then it is pretty unlikely that this will fair any better on its own. But with a decent aerial it is amazing. I used a roof aerial to test it as we cannot get a good digital signal indoors on anything. I like to think I am an up-to-date gadgety kind of person but I hadn't heard of these TV dongles and I am astonished that the functionality of a digital set top box can be packaged in a USB dongle and yet give the picture quality this does. Remote control works just fine (it looks to me like it uses infra-red and so probably relies on line-of-sight between the remote and the dongle - I doubt it would work if you plugged the dongle in "round the back" of a desktop, for example). At the price it is a no-brainer, I bought one to (hopefully) give my son TV access on his PC when he sets off to uni next month. Depends on signal quality wherever he ends up of course... I knocked one star off because, as someone else has commented, the EPG is incredibly slow to populate - I have left it on one channel for over an hour so far and even then it only received two "CLOSE" entries in the EPG, which seemed to cover the entire broadcasting day. Is this a general problem or a fault on mine? Don't know, more research needed in to that problem I think...
Perseverence pays off!! August 12, 2008 cheshirejim (Cheshire, UK) I cursed this product when the first Auto Scan only resulted in 4 channels. However, I kept on repeating the operation, detecting more channels each time. By Auto Scan #5, I'd managed to get 88 channels, but not BBC3 and BBC4. I tried again after 7pm (when they come on air) and they magically appeared. Great value for money!
Geat little gadget August 10, 2008 Warsteiner (Hampshire, England) I live in the GU1x postocde area that is only 20 miles from London but will not be able to receive Freeview until 2012! I can only get C5 some of the time and this seems to depend on the weather. I have tried plugging a Freeview receiver into my TV and all I get is "No signal found" so when I ordered this I wasn't expecting a lot. I tried the supplied aerial and nothing :( but then tried the indoor aerial and to my amazement I was able to receive about 20 channels :) All of the BBC and ITV variants as well as Virgin1, the History Channel, etc. and all looking perfect on my TFT monitor. For 20 you cannot go wrong with this. If it worked for me in a non-Freeview area then you may even be able to use the supplied aerial in a Freeview area - great product!
Brilliant! August 7, 2008 J. kelly 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I brought this product mainly for the recording feature and was not dissapointed. i am using media centre and picked up 71 channels including radio. picture quality is amazing although i am not using the suplied aerial as it is very poor and would not recomend. i am now able to recoed hundreads of programes for 15. bargain!
Poorly constructed..... August 6, 2008 Clarkey311 (Aberdeen) Bought this usb TV tuner last year and am disappointed to say it has stopped working. I used this item on average 2-3 times a week for a couple hours at ago and am sad to say it stopped working after 3-4 months. Some positives are that when you get it working the picture quality is very good, better than the TV in the living room when we had it hooked up to a freeview box. You can also keep it on top of other windows. However the negatives outweigh the Positives. The first being the poor build quality, After 10 - 15 minute of use it becomes red-hot, Another thing I noticed was that every time I removed it from my pc and plugged it back in I had to reinstall the drivers?!?!? Never had to do this with anything else. The Arial provided with it is not strong enough to receive all the channels, even in a strong signal area. Nice idea... poorly executed.
