4 out of 5 stars Good at the price.   September 24, 2008

Ordered this Sunday, when my old Thomson box suddenly packed up,(wouldn't come out of standby), and arrived yesterday, so full marks for service.

Set up so easy, just wire it up and switch on and just let it get on with it, doing its auto-search, etc. Now working fine.

I had been tempted by the dearer Philips, but lack of technical information and previous bad experience with Philips products meant otherwise. We already have a Goodmans box on our upstairs telly, years old and still going strong, so decided to stick with Goodmans, despite some of the negative reviews. Anybody's whose went wrong shortly after installation must have just had a bad experience.

For the money, it does every thing you want and only lacks some of the more advanced "features" of much more expensive boxes. They tend to be plagued with constant automatic software updates, which sounds fine, but in reality, is a nuisance. It interferes with your viewing, coming at any time, and sometimes stops the thing working altogether until you power off and on again! They should get it right in the first place before they release to market. Take note Thomson. It was after one of your automatic updates that my Thomson box packed up all together.

A nice touch with this box is that there is a reset button on the back, which effectively acts like power on and off and also they even include a scart lead as well as an R.F. lead, so all you need to get going.

Only downside is that they have got rid of the old stereo o/p jacks and replaced them with a digital music o/p, so it's alright if you have got a digital music system, but it can't be connected to an analogue system like mine, not that I want to. This is why I have not given it 5 stars.

Don't even think about buying this. Difficulty tuning from day one, and now 3 months old and stuck on standby mode - won't even reboot and switch on. Amazon returns to the rescue again!

Goodmans GDB9 Digital Set Top Box

This is rubbish. Turns itself on when in stand-by, loses programming, periodically only allows picture in black and white (yes, reprogramme again)
All in all a waste of money.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY   July 7, 2008

This item stopped working after only 2 weeks.

It simply stopped converting the signal to digital so one day it just died!

Even when it was working there was some weird noises coming from the box. My area has very good signal, I bought another box from a different brand which is working just fine.

Excellent product.
Good value - comes with necessary patch cables (scart and TV co-ax).
Very easy to follow instructions - set up is a doddle.
Has the facility to scan for up-dated software.
Works beautifully with indoor (amplified) t.v. antenna on old kitchen t.v.
Crisp, clean images and good colour. Sound is marred by awful audio amp and speaker in the t.v., but there is a digital audio out socket on the box for a separate digital audio amp. (if you have one that is!!)
Strongly recommended (although I cannot compare it to any other) for what is provided.
