I didn't go wrong with my 81 January 8, 2009 Mr. Wen X. Zhong (Manchester) had this for 3 weeks now. I bought it because my ipods have aged batteries. Pros: The 1st day I got it I immediately noticed the difference in sound quality from my 1st gen iPod nano and iPod 30GB. The separation in bass mids and trebles is noticeably better than the ipods, the sound stage is also wider, bass is rich and tight yet not excessive. This is concluded using the same sets of earphones (the Ultimate ears Triple Fi 10 Pro and the Sony EX-082 that came with this walkman). The plain fact is that it sounds just better than the iPods. as I listen to it, I feel more surrounded by the music, the whole atmospheres of the songs are just better described. As some other user suggested-the sound is sensational. That SenseMe thing is very interesting and it works OK (not always accurate though). If you have the habit of letting the player to decide what you listen to then this walkman is meant for you, the walkman is like an enhanced, intelligent iPod shuffle in this respect. You can create folder trees to manage your musics, or you can just simply put all the tracks in to the "music" folder. Whichever way you do, the player will still build a database according to the tags of the tracks (ie. genre, artist, album, released year). this is really convenient for people who got used to the music management style of iTunes. 3 Months of free Napster to-go trial is awesome (for windows users only), do try it. And I'd say the Napster software manages this player quite well. The sony EX082 earphones are very comfortable to wear, the sound quality is very decent. I have listened to the Ultimate ears TF 10 and I'd say I am still happy with these EX082 earphones because they are so much more comfortable than my TF10. Cons: I'm a long term iTunes, iPod and Mac user, I'd say the iPods & iTunes work very well together whereas with this S639F you have to try other ways to make it work with iTunes on a Mac. The walkman tries to connect it to my Mac all the time, basically you just can't "eject" it properly, every time after I ejected it it would re-connect it to the Mac again in half a second, which can be annoying, but you can open up the disc utilities to "dismount" it. You can select tracks from iTunes then drag them in to the walkman, but if you drag too many at once it won't copy, the reason is unknown. How it displays the album art ie the CD cover picture is unknown! Only a small portion of the tracks from my iTunes library can have their pictures displayed on this walkman. No, you can't create a playlist on the fly like what you can do with the ipods. DO MAKE A FIRMWARE UPDATE WHEN YOU GET IT, the latest firmware is 1.11 which you can find from Sony EU website. if you don't update the firmware it may occasionally freeze and drain the battery.
awesome why oh why buy an ipod January 8, 2009 Dr. R. S. Bailey This product is fantastic thought my last mp3 player a samsung was good this is a superb piece of kit. everything about it is good price compared with an ip0d is good this is far far better than anything else i have come across. just buy one and you wont be disappointed. my only niggle would have preferred a more robust case.
Problems with Podcasts and having 2 walkman ( walkmen?) January 8, 2009 Si. (uk) I bought the 4 gb version for my daughter and was so impressed at how easy it was I bought the 16gb version for my self - Foolishly thinking they could be run on the same shared PC. So far I have had nothing but problems. I have resorted to phoning the help desk and although I can now get music onto my walkman I cannot use the software E.G. the Media Manager Programme. The free tracks I got with it had to be written over as the thing insisted I reformat it. And I have yet to manage to download a podcast from the BBC iPlayer, though as stated my daughters has worked flawlessly. The Sony Telephone Support was poor, the techie on the other end of the telephone line couldn't see what my problem was and I still await an answer to an e-mail I have sent. The Sony support website is rubbish unless you have are looking for a particular answer they have posted. The Player itself plays music beautifully if only I could use all the features I would be over the moon with the unit. Overall a great piece of kit spoilt by some minor niggles I cannot get an answer for
This is a brilliant product January 7, 2009 Mrs. Rosemary Kind (Bedford) I read all the reviews on different MP3 players as well as IPODs and I am glad that I took notice of what everyone was saying as I purchased the Sony 16GB player as a Christmas present for myself and it really is brilliant. It is easy to use and I didn't really need to read the instructions to use it. The sound quality is great and it is easy to find the songs, videos, pictures you want. If you buy this product, you will not be disappointed.
Amazing Item, Great Price January 7, 2009 Mr. S. R. Wood (Essex) This is simply one of the best players on the market at the moment, it is so light and small, and it simply does not weigh anything. The quality of the headphones are amazing, and the screen is as bright and colourful and clear to read. It does take a bit of getting used to if you are used to an apple scroll wheel, but after a few plays with this sony player you forget why you ever need an ipod. You can use it with WM11 and it comes with a free 3 month trial for Napster, so you can really test out the player with all of the great music available. I would say this is worthy of 6 stars but amazon doesnt account for that!!
