Amazon.co.uk Review
This limited edition Xbox bundle includes two free Sega games: Sega GT and Jet Set Radio Future
. Take the power and flexibility of a dedicated computer gaming system and combine it with the easy-to-use, instant-on format of a high-end console system and what do you get? Well, if you also add in DVD playback ability and broadband Internet connectivity, you get Xbox.

The advanced components inside Xbox make it the undisputed powerhouse among current game consoles. A 733 MHz Intel main processor and 233 MHz graphics processor from industry leader nVidia deliver photorealistic graphics in real time. A cavernous hard drive stores saved games and characters, making flimsy memory sticks obsolete. The built-in Ethernet port enables super-fast multiplayer online gaming over a broadband Internet connection. Four game controller ports allow you and three of your buddies to play at the same time, or you can use them for other peripherals such as gamepads, light guns, voice-activated headsets, and who knows what else?

But Xbox has more going for it than fancy innards. The Xbox's Windows-based operating system is a breeze to program on, earning it grateful accolades from Electronic Arts, Infogrames, THQ, and other game producers. The less time developers spend struggling with the operating system means the more time they spend tweaking gameplay, which ultimately results in better games--and games are what it's all about. --Mike Fehlauer Amazon.com

2 out of 5 stars Im afriad i cant give this more then 2 stars   December 14, 2003

I might be whining here, but this is another console that is just short of the mark.

alot of the problem is the price and the content, sure there are some good games out there like halo, but you have to really enjoy them, you need Xbox live, something students like me just cant afford.

The pad is very heavy and bulky, and compared with the gamecube pad for example, there isnt a prioirty for certian buttons, like the 'A' button on gamecube

i was expecting something magical, but i was obviously fooled

i would recomend the Gamecube instead of the Xbox to anyone

2 out of 5 stars Not a patch on a PC   September 4, 2003

I bought an XBOX back in November 2002, I heard a lot of hype and good things about it, some of mates at work had them and talked about how good they were. Having solely played games on pc's since 1997 I was used to very high standard high res graphics, I knew the XBOX wouldn't be as good as a PC but I was willing to give it a chance to prove me wrong about my thoughts on consoles.

I got the XBOX with 7 games with all the top titles like Halo, Splinter Cell, Rocky Boxing etc. I was very enthusiastic about it until I switched it on and saw the graphics. Oh my god how bad are they!?!?! The level of detail is terrible, maybe im just used to playing on my PC which is about 50x better than the XBOX. Who knows. I just couldn't focus on the games because the graphics were so terrible. It's not even like I was playing this on a bad television, I was playing it on a 32" panasonic wide screen T.V.

If your used to poo consoles then get an XBOX because they are better than any other console, but if you want the ultimate games then buy a PC because an XBOX isn't in the same ballpark.

5 out of 5 stars I really didn't want to like it - but now I love it   January 30, 2003

I won one of these in a competition... it was kind of sickening at the time. I'd spent the last year knocking the Xbox for its ugliness, its lack of pedigree, its "sledgehammer" approach to everything -- specs, marketing, titles. But then I played it and I had to eat a load of humble pie. It really is a great console.

I still own my PS2 and I won't be giving that up - it's still got a load of superb titles. But for me, the Xbox is as big a jump from PS1 as the PS1 was from the NES. (In comparison, I feel that the PS2 is only an incremental jump from PS1 - not in specs, but in gaming feel). There's NOTHING wrong with the PS2, but I do feel that too many titles are just sequels of stuff I already enjoyed on PS1... not enough newness.

On current titles, I would say that the best of the best Xbox titles are better than the best of the best PS2 titles.

On this package, Sega GT2002 is a truly awesome game. JSRF is not bad (although not really my cup of tea)... but you get two full games included in the price of a console. You get nothing with PS2 of GameCube.

Another point - the Xbox is very well built. The engineering of the thing is tank-like. It's a shame it looks like a tank, too - but hide it away from sight and just enjoy the games.

5 out of 5 stars PS2 "giggle", GameCube "loud guffaw", XBOX....fantastic   January 27, 2003

To be fair, I've had ALL of the three major consoles over the past 10 months. However, I finally invested some of my pennies [ok, pounds:)] in the almighty XBOX just before Christmas.

What made me opt for this? Well, the PS2 wasn't worth the time or effort so I parted with that only three months after getting one. Yes, the CUBE faired better, but to be honest, after it's initial furour, the whole Nintendo/Cube atmosphere wained to a pathetic whimper, which as a casual gamer who has little time for the childish/cartoonish likes of Mario et al, didn't seem too attractive.

Finally becoming so distraught with the appaling lack of 'quality & quantity' on GameCube, I had my arm twisted by the fantastic XBOX package deals running up to the Christmas period. I mean, the actual console (costing around 250 to actually manufacture), with HALO, Splinter Cell and the dbl whammy of Sega GT/JSRF, at around 180 was just too tempting...

However, when unpacking the box it was clear then that this was no ordinary games console. It is solidly constructed, much like the Challenger tank of the games industry. Unlike the flimsy and unreliable PS2, this machine is built to last.

I was further left aghasp when plugging it in and turning the power on for the first time. The Xbox's "dashboard" makes Sony's/Nintendo's efforts look soooohhh feeble, and setting up was so easy. It reminded me of setting up a high-end DVD player.

But yes, I know, what really mattered was games. Did it live up to some of the better titles on the PS2/GameCube. Well, packaged with HALO & Splinter CEll was an unbelievably shrewd move on Microsoft's part.

Both games blow away any competition on either of the other consoles. Metroid Prime? Phahh, HALO eats you for breakfast. Solid Snake? Sam Fisher stealths you at the first hurdle.

Yeah, when the XBox was initially released it lacked alot of great titles, but if one peruses the Xbox release list for the upcoming year, it makes your mouth water. Sony/Nintendo NEVER had it this good!

Finally, I ask you to take a look at the independent figures for sales of the three consoles over the festive period. Xbox sold nearly FIVE consoles compared to Nintendo's paltry two! Like myself, casual gamers and hardcore gamers alike seem to be voting with their wallets.

If you want power AND decent games AND a console that won't break down in 18months, this is where to start.

Forget the PS2 (fairly decent BUT not really a next-gen by current standards); leave the Cube well alone unless you're a teenager with a 14" portable and a fetish for cartoon graphics. Hear MORE, see More, PLAY MORE! Buy an XBOX and join the gaming revolution!

5 out of 5 stars A Game console at it best   January 12, 2003

I own XBOX,PS2,GAMECUBE,DREAMCAST,PS1,GBA,N64 GAME GEAR etc, i own em all so i know what im talking about.I also work in the video game industry so I can give you the truth that the ps2 fanboys wont tell you.IF you are looking for the ultimate video game system skip the PS2 and go for the XBOX.Heres a few good reasons.

1.XBOX lets you rip cds in to most of your games, if you dont like the game soundtrack you can make your own. Ps2 can not do this.

2.You will never have to buy a memory card. The systems hard drive stores more than enough room for all your saves, ripped music, and downloaded extras.I have 60 game saves and 250 songs on my XBOX and still have used less than 1% of the memory. Ps2 does not have a hard drive. The one in japan is NOT coming to america due to poor sales.

3.The games are always better on the xbox. There are only a select few games that are on ps2 and not on XBOX. Halo, Dead or Alive 3, Nija Gaiden, Mech Assult, Sega GT , and many more XBOX exclusives more than make up for this.XBOX has over 200 games available and more than 200 coming in the next year.

4.Graphics and Sound favor the XBOX. ps2 is dated and weak. The Graphics on the XBOX are superior to anything the ps2 can do.XBOX offers Dolby Digital in 95%of there games during actual gameplay and not just the cut scenes.PS2 can only do dolby digital in cut scenes...very weak.

5.Online play is superior on the XBOX. Built in ethernet adapter. No need to buy another piece of hardware like the ps2. There is online chat in every game on XBOX Live. Ps2 only has 1 game in which you can talk. XBOX live has out sold ps2 network adapters by 73%.

6. You can download extras from the internet to your hard drive.Extra wepons, tracks, cars, skins, missions, etc. ps2 cant do this.

7.If you want an old, outdated, less powerful system buy a ps2, if you want the most powerful, best sounding, amazing system in the world buy the new king of cosoles...XBOX...
