4 out of 5 stars Great game but some problems   October 21, 2008

I love this game but as others have reported it does lag at times - even with the graphics set to minimum and crowd turned off. This can be annoying and cause mistakes (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it).

One problem I find that hasn't been reported elsewhere is the 'bounce' on the guitar strum - on my daughter's XBOX 360 you can strum very freely and it doesn't matter if you hit the strum bar and let it bounce all the way back - on the wired Gibson X-Plorer with the PC version I seem to often get a double note when I do that.

4 out of 5 stars Great game, a few concerns though!   July 11, 2008

Ok, for starters my computer. I have almost the exact specification recommended by the publishers (2GB RAM, 3.0Ghz Core2Duo, 8800GT 512MB Graphics Card) so i was expecting a smooth ride.

The installer, certainly for me, was an interesting experience. The first time i ran it, it crashed my computer. The following times it just froze even before it had started copying files (in the "do you agree, etc" steps). So i literally had to do a blind install, clicked frantically through the buttons until it finally worked and installed. The installation was painfully slow. It took well over an hour, crippled my PC resource wise without even using any CPU power, so i wasn't impressed.

However, once i'd restarted to clear up my system a bit, it was fine. It loads up faster than the console versions and after turning off the crowd it worked great. The songs are of course the same as the console versions and the courses are the same too. So you can practice on your PC and then thrash out with your friends when you go round their houses - even taking your controller if you want. The graphics are top notch - sharper than on a TV and generally pretty solid. A tad of video lag here and there, but it's not bad enough to throw you off.

Online is a bit shabby to be honest, it connects fine, and the leaderboards are good, but for now there's nothing really there. There aren't many people looking for battles from what i've seen (whether it's a timing issue or just my computer i don't know) and as of YET there's no downloadable content - the main reason i got it for the PC.

You can of course download custom tracks, but i haven't tried that yet. It's a good option if you get bored of the tracks you've got, and there are plenty of free songs to use (ie not licensed artists).

Overall, it's guitar hero. It's fantastic, but the installer makes this 4 stars instead of 5 (i gave it 5 for gameplay though).

4 out of 5 stars Such fun   May 13, 2008

This game is quite marvelous. Of course some tracks on the soundtrack are awful, but that's unavoidable, and there'll always be something there for you. Even in one-player mode it can be great fun at a party (assuming your speakers are any good). It would have got five stars overall from me, but for the price. On the American Amazon, it's a mere $60 dollars, which is about thirty quid. I can appreciate that things are usually slightly more expensive over here, due to myriad factors, but really? an extra 50% on the price? Ridiculous. Otherwise, I heartily recommend it.

I'm running a high spec PC and sufferd some timing problems. I managed to get over this by turning the graphics down and turning the crowd off. After I did that the game runs perfectly overal it's a wopping 10/10
