Enya's greatest moment in music! October 4, 2007 FAMOUS NAME (UNITED KINGDOM) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
One of the greatest albums of the decade and most certainly one of the greatest works ever to be captured on CD! Undoubtedly Enya's greatest moment which she can never hope to better - but only ever hope to match. She manages to capture every emotion here - and every tempo. A masterpiece where Enya reaches perfection in the extreme. This also includes her greatest single ever (that ironically did not chart - and there goes the British Public for you again! Shame on you!!) in 'Wild Child'. It is one of those songs reminiscent of the days when singles would be bought and played over and over again 'til they were worn out! Each track is perfectly placed, and clearly much thought has gone into this arrangement. There's not a single song that does not belong on this album, and it would be like having a jigsaw with a missing piece without any one of them. This is one of the most tuneful and melodic collection of songs you will ever find gathered together in one place! The album opens with the beautiful and tranquil title track: 'A Day Without Rain', and one of many short songs on this album that leave you wanting more and more - once again; this proves the point that some of the best and most greatest works are indeed the shortest of all! This track is then followed by the aforementioned 'Wild Child' followed by the hauntingly melancholic 'Only Time', which is based upon a lovely and reflective mood. After this we get 'Tempus Vernum' which is a marvellous interpretation of the dramatic and sudden arrival of spring - this is yet another short track, which then fades into the beautifully sad 'Deora Ar Mo Chroi'. After this, we go into an 'upbeat' mode for 'Dora's Secret' which has a distinctly happy tone to it. 'Silver Inches' is a merry little track - short and sweet, and one is almost able to imagine a minuet being performed by an ancient group of little old-fashioned people! This is followed by the magnificent 'Pilgrim' - another inspiring 'shortie'. The uplifting tempo of 'One by One' is quite 'jolly', and 'The First Of Autumn' is interpreted like the startling arrival of the said season after a long and seemingly endless summer. 'Lazy Days' is the last track on this classic album, and is somewhat an 'odd' finale for such a moody and classic collection of perfect works of art that cannot be matched! You will have to go a very long way to find another album that is so complete, perfect and magnificent as this is in every way, and most certainly has to be the peak of Enya's long and outstanding career!
What a surprise, another superb Enya album September 29, 2007 Alan (Stafford, United Kingdom) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I could be wrong, but I don't think Enya have ever made a poor song. A Day Without Rain flows brilliantly, as all Enya albums do, and it is so beautiful and soothing to the ear. Drift away with this selection of Irish magnificence.
ENYA'S MASTERPIECE August 10, 2007 stuart (MIDDLESBROUGH, ENGLAND) Enya's first full-length album of new material in five years (and her fourth in 12 years) will have a familiar sound to the millions who have followed her career so far. As usual, the slow songs sound like "Silent Night" being performed in a cathedral, and the less slow songs are paced by rhythm patterns that would be called pizzicato passages if they were being played on real strings instead of string-like synthesizers. Over the music, Enya sings in her multi-tracked, ethereal voice, making Roma Ryan's lyrics, which are full of pastoral imagery and abstract romantic sentiments, seem even more insubstantial than they already are. In the press materials accompanying the release, Enya explains why it took her five years to come up with less than 34 and a half minutes of music that sounds like most of her earlier music by noting that she plays all the instruments and does all the singing herself without using samples. It might be more accurate to say that there is no need for her to release albums any more frequently than she does, since each one sells over a long period of time. And since her listeners are more concerned with the mood she sets than with musical content, the similarity to her other albums is a good thing. This is music that works almost entirely as a surface pleasure; strip it of its pretensions, and it's just contemporary easy listening music.
Only Time is Only a Masterpiece February 19, 2007 Jay (Mauritius) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Just buy this album for one song,"Only Time" - a timeless classic. The other songs are also memorable in their little way.I tend not to remember Enya's lyrics because her music is enough to carry you through a spiritual journey. I remember this song being used in the soundtrack of Sweet November. It lit up what was an otherwise dull film. That's how good it was.
One of her best October 1, 2006 Hazel M. (Hampshire, England) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This album is one of my favourite Enya albums. The tracks go excellently together and many of them are simply fantastic in their own right. The title of the album fits very well, as it is a very soothing album to listen to and the songs very much remind me of good days. "A Day Without Rain" is an excellent instrumental opening to the album. It just gets you into the feel of it and is very relaxing. The piano is played very well and it's simple, yet elegant. My other favourites are "Only Time", which has beautiful lyrics, soothing music and is sung wonderfully, as always, "Flora's Secret", which is very uplifting, "Fallen Embers" and "One By One", which has strong lyrics and beautiful instrumentation. The Latin track, "Tempus Vernum" (Springtime) and Irish Gaelic track, "Deora Ar Mo Chroi" (Tears On My Heart) are good additions also. "Deora Ar Mo Chroi" sounds absolutely beautiful, even if you can't understand the lyrics. The tracks I haven't mentioned are also very good. Overall, this is a superb album and definitely one of Enya's best. It's extremely elegant and I think it is something you can listen to again and again without ever getting bored. It is also a great boost to the mood on those rainy days!
