Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Soul searching hurt and honesty are the key to this classic   December 17, 2003

When i first received this album I didn't realise what I was letting myself in for. There are some incredible high points, Muhammad Ali's drumming is ferocious, the two bass players at times really link well and the piano of Bobby Few offers some wonderful counterpoints to Mary Maria's soul searching voice.
Albert Ayler. Well, he should stick to the saxophone. His playing is incredibly empassioned, particularly on the opening track, and this passion can obviously be felt when he switches to the bagpipes, but for me he should leave them well alone. The pipes, along with the occassional ham line from the Mary Maria, are for me the only downside of an otherwise fantastic album. The tracks that I find are the high points are the title track, the gut wrenching "a man is like a tree" and the honest blues of "drudgery" where Henry Vestine, the guitarist who seems to have been hiding all album, sounds like a freer Albert King. Buy this album.
