1 out of 5 stars Proof that squirrels are clever, but not squirrel proof!   May 1, 2008

I was so excited about this feeder: 2 days after hanging it for the first time, the squirrels had figured it out. It didn't make any difference where I located it - I even replaced the wire supplied with a much longer one and hung it up really high, but they just absailed down the wire! Not nearly devious enough to baffle them, and frankly a waste of money.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't work unless you've got a big enough tree   February 25, 2008

I loved the idea - and when I first hung it up, it was SOOO satisfying to see them failing to get at the nuts, but unfortunately the squirrel dismantled this within a very short period of time. I don't have a big enough tree to hang it from in my garden, and definitely can't hang it away in a spot where they can't jump to it. So if you've got a small garden with small trees in it don't buy this!

1 out of 5 stars ......a weekend's entertainment   June 1, 2007

We put this up on a Saturday and by Monday morning the squirrels had worked out how to get to the food...... but we did have great fun watching them figure it out. It was worth the money just for the entertainment! It took two days for them to work out that if they slid down with the outer cover and then hung on to the wire perches at the bottom, the outside cover would go up again and they could feed for as long as they wished - or could hold on for. Certainly not squirrel proof but initially it did cause them a great deal of frustration.

4 out of 5 stars Location Location Location   January 3, 2007

I was given one of these and soon found that it needs to be hung well clear of any place from which a squirrel can jump onto it. Once a squirrel has got onto the nut cage, it will make mincemeat of the wire mesh cage. Dont underestimate the ability of a squirrel to jump amazing distances, and even to rearrance things. I got up one morning to find that they had had managed to free the supporting cable and the feeder was lying on the ground, completely chewed out of shape (and empty). I only got it to work when I carefully hung it by a wire from a tree in such a way that there was no way a squirrel could jump from the side or from below. Since finding this ideal location not one squirrel has defeated it. My dear woodpeckers now visit it every day, despite it's battered appearance from it's previous unsuccessful use. The bad news is that the nearest suitable tree is almost out of sight of my house! Buy it if you can find a location with at least a metre of clearance all around it. Otherwise learn to love squirrels! Grrrr

1 out of 5 stars Took my squirrel 6 hours   November 2, 2006

I not only have a very obese squirrel, but one whch is also super clever. It worked out how to dismantle the feeder in just 6 hours and carted off the wire cage to goodness know where.
