2 out of 5 stars Oh Dear   May 24, 2007

I was really happy with this software at first, having upgraded from Elements 2, and the results were really great. Then the glitches started to show. I worked on some images for ages, only to find that I couldn't save them or even close the program down. Convinced it was related to my old computer I bought a new one and guess what, all the glitches were still there. I'm going to have a go with Elements 5 before I abandon Adobe altogether. Stay tuned for my experiences with that.

5 out of 5 stars Superb photo editing software   September 13, 2006

I've used lots of different image editors including The Gimp, Paint.NET, Photoshop Elements 2 and the very expensive Photoshop CS2. But Elements 4 is my favourite by a long way. It's got a wonderfully easy interface (especially if you ignore its Organiser and just use Windows Explorer to put images in a sensible folder structure) and is quite quick on my humble half Gig XP PC, even with a dozen large images loaded (hint if you find it slow, go to Edit, Preferences, Memory and increase the max used value to 80%+). I find it pretty easy now to add someone to a group shot so you can't tell who was added (the camera often lies!) and can also make convincing panoramas from multiple shots. Perspective adjustment (for those inward leaning cathedrals etc) is a fancy tool which works very well. But it's all the basic image editing that is fabulous, especially when you start using keyboard shortcuts. The Quick fix collection is really useful, scanning, cropping and resizing easy, the levels histogram brings dull pictures to life and all the tools are beautifully crafted with full control over opacity etc.

2 out of 5 stars Terrific software, horrendously slow.   August 21, 2006

Photoshop Elements is, as ever, wonderful software with a few new features worth having (most notably the magic extractor which extracts an object from its background). However it is so painfully slow that I am debating a return to Elements 3. I have used it on three different computers, one of which has 3GB of RAM. There isn't a good enough reason in my view to stick with Elements 4 when 3 worked so smoothly. Just to give an indication of just how slow it is, changing from text editor to cursor tool has taken over one minute on my 3GB machine. This becomes very weary making when simply retyping a caption becomes a ten minute job. Stick with Elements 3 until this has been ironed out.

4 out of 5 stars Lots Of Fun With A Few Glitches   July 24, 2006

This version of Adobe Photoshop is full of cool tricks and some frustrating ones as well. I take a lot of underwater photos without a strobe, so the colors can be too blue or flat. The Photo Editor works great bringing back the original colors, contrasts and shadows. I don't like to change a photo too much and you can get very precise with any change you make. There are lots of ways to alter or manipulate photos here. The regular non-water photos also edit very well. The skin tone option is amazing and the `tagging' and `drag & drop' features are very easy. The learning curve was a bit much at first, but once you have a half dozen controls down, it gets easy very quickly. The slide show feature is what I truly bought this for and there are almost too many options. I try to keep the special effects to a minimum to not detract from the show. The blank slide feature with storyboard/text makes the show more entertaining and personal. The program does have its glitches. It takes quite a while to simply load Photoshop and I have a fast computer with tons of memory. The editor takes more time to load than I expected as well. I did have a few photos "fail" when I changed too much, but there is a `layer' feature that can prevent this. Everything is well organized and easy to find, however. With nothing else to compare this to, I'd say it's a good choice if you don't mind the download times.

5 out of 5 stars This is the greatest software on earth.   July 17, 2006

The software loaded with no problem, and I was using it to do simple editing right away. Photoshop Elements 4.0 is fantastic. My O.K. looking digital photograghs look anywhere from much better to amazing with this software. There is a learning curve if you're not familiar with digital editing. Adobe's website offers inexpensive 21 day courses that really helped me. Also, I made use of Adobe's free help center on the web to learn the software features.

This is the software that can do everything I wanted other inferior picture software to do. Again, there is a learning curve, but I didn't think it was difficult to understand or use Photoshop Elements 4.

For a little time spent learning, I got a big, big bang for my buck.
