1 out of 5 stars Rubbish   August 28, 2010

The program would not install on my computer running Windows XP SP3 even after Ancestry technical dept. managed to suggest work arounds that disabled the computer. Now I have a new computer running Windows 7 and the program will still not install, freezing in the same place as before. I would suggest that you think carefully before buying this program.

5 out of 5 stars Has to be the best family tree software around!   July 22, 2010
G. Horsham (UK)
Family Tree Maker 2010 is PC software for storing and sharing your family tree, something that this product is extremely good at. Very similar to the 2009 version in concept, which was also excellent, but there have been some very notable improvements.

Going straight into the product itself, the main obvious difference is the user interface - it is very much improved and more intuitive than the 2009 version; navigation was so easy that I did not need to use the extensive on-line help. As before, entering details is very easy. There is a quick entry pane for adding new people and children of an individual, and if you select one of these, there is a further more detailed pane to add date of death, marriage(s) etc as well as media clips, notes and tasks. All in all, a very comprehensive list of attributes that can be added for an individual (dates of degrees, confirmation etc) plus you can add your own custom facts/notes too. You can then also print the details in a number of different, pre defined ways (charts and various different report types, too many to mention).

There is now much better connectivity with the web, plus there is a much improved location mapping system with the inclusion of new on-line maps (makes it seem much more complete and seamless). There is also direct connectivity to Ancestry.co.uk (with on-line registration), AND with the ability to merge results into your family tree. It almost removes the fun from searching for your family tree. Almost, but not quite, because you always want to dig more, and embellish the details you have with media files and notes.

As for the installation, this was straight forward and easy to register; this platinum version includes 6 months membership to ancestry.co.uk. Installation did not detect that I had a previous version (2009) and installed itself into a new 2010 folder, however, when run it notified me that there was an update available which quickly installed itself when I accepted this. Next, it did detect that I had an older version of Family Tree data files and asked me to back up these before conversion, which it did with no issues - all very neat and tidy.

Overall, this product is excellent and for a beginner or expert. I can thoroughly recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars Better than 2006 version   July 6, 2010

I have used 2006 and 2009 and although they worked well 2010 is a great deal better. The link with Ancestry is quicker and Ihad no problem signing up for the
6 month subscription. The only gripe is that the subscription is only for the essential access you will have to pay to upgrade for the premium which gives you more info. I was unable to transfer 2006 to 2010 without re-inputting data but this was easy. I have made contact with other people researching the same family so all in all a great product.

5 out of 5 stars Family tree maker 2010   July 1, 2010

I found family tree maker 2010 Platinum Edition brilliant, so much better than my old version 16, however it is so different it took awhile to find everything, but well worth while the effort, users new to FTM will probably find it easier as they will start from scratch. being able to download family history and searching through the records from Ancestry is a real plus and the 'Getting started guide' was very helpful
Also a bargain price from Amazon, and delivery quick and efficient.
