Amazon.co.uk Review
From la Mucca (cow) to la Corona (crown), la casa (house) to l'iglu (igloo), EuroTalk Interactive's Italian Vocabulary Builder will give you most of the elementary Italian words you will want to learn, together with a few that you would never dream you'd need on your first trip to Italy!

Ridiculously simple in format, the CD-Rom first asks you to register your name, then presents you with three options: "Learn", "Games" and "Record". First try the "Learn" function, where you can scroll through a number of basic (and some bizarre!) choices of vocabulary, which are each pronounced by a male and a female voice, presented as a picture and written as a word. Or, click the "dice" button, which will present you with a random order of items. Then move on to the "Games", which include "Find the Card", "Match the Pairs" and "Beat the Clock", all fairly self-explanatory exercises that can each be attempted at three difficulty levels. The tiger narrator will help, with a congratulatory "perfect!" or an empathetic "oops", depending on your score. But the real joy of this program is the "Record" function, which allows you to hear a word pronounced, then record your own attempt, before playing back both versions to compare your effort to that of a native speaker. Great fun and a fantastic learning tool. Once you have a few recordings you are happy with, play them one after the other in the "Cinema" to rapturous applause!

Claiming to be for the 4-12 years age group, this package is certainly intuitive enough for children to use, though the younger end of this age group would require support. Reading straight from the disc, it doesn't require a lengthy set-up procedure and it doesn't litter your hard drive with unnecessary files. It is bright, fun, and innovative, and certainly keeps the attention of the student much longer than more traditional formats. Undoubtedly, because of that, it is more effective. Great for the kids before you take them on an Italian holiday, or for adults who want a simple, fun introduction to the language. Deceptively good.--Lucie Naylor

I found this a most disappointing introduction to Italian. It's basically a dictionary on cd-rom - fine for helping you identify and pronounce individual words and phrases, but useless at helping you construct easy sentences. A good dictionary with phonetics would do the job far more cheaply and would be a lot more portable.

2 out of 5 stars Not so bad for real beginners   August 25, 2001

Lacks of grammatical examples and explanations. Only teaches you about 275 expresions and words which are ok to get started but not sufficient to make a conversation. If you are just starting to learn the languaje, perhaps this is your course, but if you already know a bit of Italian, I'd recommend to go for other course which will give you more value for money.

4 out of 5 stars Fun way to learn   May 24, 2001

I'd never used a CD-ROM as a learning tool before and I was very impressed with this software. It provides a very fun way of learning, using various methods to make remembering words and phrases easier. My only complaint is that it is not accompanied by a book or grammatical aid. However, I will definitely be ordering the next level.

This is an extremely fun way for anybody to learn a language - The first time I used it I couldnt drag my self away - Its ideal if you need to learn the basics of Italian in a hurry which in my case was true as I'm visiting Venice in April and would like to know a little!! The software has 9 chapters for you to work your way through at your own pace starting with simple things such as first words, food and colours working upto harder things such as phrases, telling the time and countries. With each chapter there is 4 different activities to work your way through,1) Word practice where your "tutors" say the words and you can repeat them and even record yourself saying the word/phrase. 2) Speaking practice where you can opt for 4, 8 or 10 pictures to pop up on the screen at a time and you have the option of your "tutor" saying the word/phrase first then you repeat it after him/her or if your feeling very clever you can record yourself with no help what so ever then play it back so you can compare your accent to that of the tutor!!. This is very good as you find you pick it up if you repeat after them a couple of times then do it on your own. 3) is an easy quiz and 4) is a more difficult quiz where you earn points for each correct answer you give. The aim of the quizzes is to achieve a score of 1200 points by the time you have finished your basic Italian studies. You'll find that you can complete a chapter and have a good knowledge of it in as little as 2 hours.

Give it a try - you'll be surprised at just how quickly you can pick up a new language!
