1 out of 5 stars I strongly recommend NOT buying Norton products   July 28, 2005

Since exactly one month before my subscription expired, Norton internet security decided I could no longer run liveupdate unless I had chosen to renew my subscription then and there, effectively reducing my subscription period from 12 months to 11 months unless I chose to resubscribe.
Then, it also turns out that if you choose to renew online rather than purchasing the Norton 2005 upgrade on CD, even though you pay exactly the same price and save Symantec a bunch of money on materials and packaging, it turns out that you're not eligible for customer support.
They rely on bully-boy tactics to hold on to customers, ripping half of them off along the way, and I've lost all respect for symantec/norton products.

4 out of 5 stars Norton Internet Security 2005   May 18, 2005

I previously had the 2003 Firewall and Anti-virus, and I have to say previous errors I had on websites where things wern't displayed correctly have been fixed with this lastest version.

The installation at first, completely froze the computer, and caused several problems, however after removal, and then reinstallation, everything worked perfectly.

The actual software is brilliant, I couldn't put the features down, perfect for the people whom just want to use their computer for the lesuire rather than sorting out viruses, spam and hackers, as these are all sorted for you.

Well worth buying, but beware becuase installation I found to be stressful!

4 out of 5 stars The strangest update of them all   February 25, 2005

I ordered this product via Amazon since the 'Upgrade' was almost 20 cheaper than the full product. I checked Symantec's website and it said that anyone who had a single symantec product installed (antivirus, antispam etc.) was eligible for the upgrade. As my subscription to Antivirus 2004 expired I decided to install the upgrade.

The product seemed to work well, but when I ran live-update I was told that my subscription to 'antivirus had expired'. Obviously it was still recognising the old installation. I tried calling Symantec support. This event meant hanging on to the phone for 15 minutes at a time hearing'easy listening music' to then finally have the line dropped on me. So much for customer friendly support.

Eventually I decided to uninstall all Symantec products from my laptop. I restarted the laptop several times and then re-installed the product. It is now working fine with none of the performance issues highlighted by other reviewers.

It seems that you must uninstall an existing product before you can install this upgrade and to be fair the manual seems to confirm that. In that case I wonder what the difference is between buying the Upgrade and the full product.

Norton Antivirus is still the leader in antivirus protection and the Firewall is quite a bit more comprehensive than the Windows Firewall. Norton Antispam (I had 2004 as well) has failed to impress me. The standard Junk filters in OUTLOOK 2003 seem to do the job equally well.

1 out of 5 stars A NORTON NIGHTMARE   February 2, 2005

Installation of this product is very straight forward and easily completed .This, however,is when the nightmare that is called Norton really begins. The speed of my PC has slowed dramatically since installation and will not accept some of the most basic commands without crashing. This would be only just bearable if the product worked as promised. It does let viruses through and doesnt keep you as safe as you might think it should. My only option left to hopefully get back to my original PC's capability is to remove the product and bin it.It is not a scratch on the 2003 version which worked without a hitch

1 out of 5 stars Badly SLOW.   January 10, 2005

I installed this software on a 500MHz Pentium-3 with 512MB RAM running Windows 98se. Having been happy enough with earlier versions of Norton Internet Security protecting my broadband connection for many years and successfully upgrading from Norton 2001 to 2003, I thought the 2005 upgrade would be worthwhile instead of just buying another year's subscription. It functioned pretty much as advertised although the AntiSpam feature had an annoying requirement to restart my Outlook Express whenever switching identities. However, its effect on the computer's overall performance was a very serious problem.
I found that some applications slowed up badly, burning CD-ROMs became unreliable, and Outlook Express would sometimes fail even to be able to collect Email (with task manager showing Norton's CCAPP not responding). Apart from the slowness I found the computer also became quite unreliable at startup often with 'blue screen' errors. Reluctantly, after almost two months of this I uninstalled Norton Internet Security, returning it to Symantec under their 60-day refund promise on the box.
The computer's performance returned immediately. Even after replacing Norton with the obvious alternatives this computer performs very well indeed and starts up properly again. Therefore I could not recommend Norton Internet Security 2005 as an upgrade on such a computer.
