A little fiddly, but a most excellant product! April 13, 2008 C. Howell (Abergavenny, Wales) We bought a pair of these a couple of years ago and have used them on a number of ski trips. I found the Skiweb to be very useful and have been very happy with it. Beware! It's not immediately apparent that one version is a hand held carrier and the other is the full carrier. The hand held carrier has a shorter strap and is carried low and horizontal which is awkward and a hazard to others. The full carrier with the longer strap is carried over the shoulder with the skis vertical and is far superior to my mind. It's hard to tell which one you are buying as they look the same- the hand held is cheaper. The Skiweb is a little fiddly to use and needs a bit of trial and error at first. Even with practise it can never be put on properly very quickly and I wouldn't use it if I were only carrying it a short distance. The method that suits me is to stand the skis against a vertical surface and loop the pole handles over the top of one ski, this way everything is kept nice and steady whilst the Skiweb is attached. The fixing ties can then be wrapped around the whole lot. The ties need to be fixed reasonably taught with as much of the hooks and eyes along the length of the Velcro in contact as possible. I tend to fix the bottom tie between the ski bindings as this prevents the skis sliding through the ties and allows the skis to be carried lower on the shoulder (stops the tops of the skis striking door frames etc). To fold the Skiweb there are little red tabs which help you line it all up. After a little practise this can be done quite quickly and it's small enough to be stored in a pocket. The reward for fixing the Skiweb is that your skis and poles are now bound together in neat convenient package that can be carried comfortably and securely over your shoulder. You are now much better balanced and organised and your hands are now free to deal with other matters such as: handrails; money; lift passes; coffee etc. The Skiweb is truly excellent if ski buses are involved. If you have to carry your skis on board, having your equipment bound together is good in cramped conditions. If the skis are stowed in a pile under the coach the Skiweb keeps everything together making loading and unloading much easier, stops anything getting lost, and helps identify your equipment. Its British made and there are a number of different designs available. Despite the Skiweb being slightly fiddly I have no hesitation in giving it top marks, I wouldn't be without it.
The best ski carrier, but there is room for improvement February 20, 2008 Mr. Richard Oliver (Sheffield, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I like innovation of new products. It's part of my job. I'll give credit where it's due, and constructive criticism as a guide to show areas for improvement. With that said, I'm always a bit doubtful of products that rate themselves in title as "The Best Ever!", so how did this product actually perform? Positives --------- The product won awards for innovation at a recent trade show in Geneva. Small, compact fold-up design, which will fit into your pocket - no other product I've seen does that. When correctly assembled to carry your skis, the load is surprisingly comfortable on your shoulder. Velcro strapping is quick to wrap and adjust around the skis, but... Negatives --------- The instructions are over simplified and do not make it absolutely clear how to wrap the velcro straps so that they don't detach under load. I needed to add one of my own ski ties to the upper securing to prevent its detachment and protect my skis from being dropped. Study and applied practice is required, which may be enough to discourage some people for buying it. It takes a while to attach to your skis, therefore it is only worth using if you intend to carry skis for medium to long distances. In reality, that's going to be to and from the hire shop, or between the piste and your roadside accommodation. The rest of the time, you will be carrying it in your already crowded pockets. Folding it back up can be an amusing test of memory! Quite expensive for a bit of nylon strap, and the velcro will eventually wear out meaning it will no longer hold down. The hook-side of the velcro can be abrasive and therefore damaging to your expensive ski clothing - be warned! In Summary ---------- It DOES make carrying skis more comfortable, once the velcro straps are correctly applied and optionally reinforced by your own ski tie. I can see this product being appreciated by parents who need to carry their adult skis and those of their children, in one go. A snap-fit reinforcement buckle on the upper securing would improve things a treat, if the designers at Skiweb are listening. Overall, a good idea reasonably implemented, but could be improved.
